Overview
Axle is seeking a highly ambitious, adaptable, structured, and detail-orientedScientist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Division Intramural Research (DIR), SARS-CoV-2 Virology Core (SVC).

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide variety of complex experimental procedures involving sterile cell culture techniques such as, but not limited to:
  • Passaging, cryopreservation, maintenance, etc. of eukaryotic primary and established cell lines.
  • Background in anti-viral compound screening using cell-based assays.
  • Perform virology techniques including performing assays such as plaque assay, plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT), TCID50 assay, virus growth and viral isolation from bodily fluids or tissues.
  • Perform molecular biology techniques such as DNA isolation, RNA isolation, RT-PCR and PCR.
  • Lead efforts to maintain a virus repository including cataloging, propagation, sequencing, and allocation of virus stocks to SVC users.
  • Perform and be comfortable with animal handling (rodents - preferred, non-human primates - desired) including clinical evaluation, inoculation, immunization, euthanasia, necropsy and tissue collection (blood, spleen, lungs, etc.).
  • Perform lab research work in the BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories, able to complete necessary training and testing for BSL-3 lab.
  • Support proof-of-inactivation testing efforts and assist development of documentation for submissions to the Institutional Biosafety Committee for review of proof-of-inactivation testing.
  • Lead SVC training program including didactic and hands-on training.
  • Maintain general lab upkeep, such as updating biospecimen repository databases for clinical specimens or lab derived samples.
  • Maintain detailed records of experiments, analyze data and present results to others at NIH or for publication.

Experience Required / Requirements

  • This requirement is for a Full Time Equivalent employee, consisting of 1920 hours (excluding Federal Holidays)
  • Work will be performed up to 40 hours per week during normal business hours, Monday- Friday, excluding Federal holidays.
  • However, work can run past business hours and flexibility will be needed, and the contractor will be responsible for scheduling.
  • Telework may be authorized if approved by the Task Leader, COR, and the Contracting Officer.
  • Work location: Bldg 33, RM 1W20 (BSL2) and Bld33, RM 1E14 (BSL3)
