Summary:
A position is open for a full-time Lab Manager at the Ragon Institute of MGH, Harvard and MIT in the Systems Serology laboratory lead by Dr. Ryan McNamara. The Systems Serology lab specifically focuses on developing novel Systems Biology technologies aimed at defining the mechanism by which antibodies provide protection from infections and disease. The Systems Serology lab scientific interests span across an exciting array of different areas of human immunology ranging from infectious diseases (HIV, influenza, malaria, TB, etc), to neonatology, autoimmune disease, and many more. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals that are curious about the human immune system and want to participate in the exciting world of diving deeply into understanding how vaccines and monoclonal antibodies can be leveraged to fight a broader array of diseases.
The Systems Serology lab now seeks an enthusiastic individual with outstanding organization skills that would like to oversee the lab. The individual will oversee all operations of the laboratory, overseeing day to day operations but also helping to support the Systems Serology-labs position within the larger institute. The lab manager will develop strategies to maximize efficiencies, to help direct the generation of standard operating procedures, to help operationalize the science, to generate collaborative strategies, to drive innovation, to effectively move the team forward as a collective. The lab manager will report directly to the leadership team to ensure that scientific strategy is maintained. In this managerial role, we hope to teach and train the candidate to lead large scientific investigative efforts, to evolve an environment where scientists can thrive, create, and innovate. The lab manager will create this foundational, inspiring environment, catalyzing exciting discovery.
Job Duties:
Under the direction of the Lab head, the applicant will be asked to independently carry out daily activities.
Organizational work:
- Supervises day to day operations of the laboratory including ordering equipment, lab materials, services, etc.
- Oversees use of laboratory funds, supply inventory and staff activities
- Operationalize the execution of lab duties
- Oversee the maintenance of equipment, experimental work, and schedules
- Support the generation of Standard Operating Procedures
- Work with additional scientists to support the execution of science
- Trains staff in specialized lab techniques
- Carries out independent research projects which involve the execution of highly sophisticated techniques
- Help inspire and create a team-environment
Communication:
- Regular communication with supervisor and team/group colleagues (one-on-one and group meetings)
- Create and present a laboratory strategy for innovation annually to the team
- Communicate with sister labs globally to ensure cohesive investigative work
- Lead lab meetings weekly to create a cohesive environment
- Perform annual review of team members
- Serves as laboratory safety officer
- Interview/build the team as is necessary
Minimum degree and field of knowledge: BA/BSc, MSc preferred
Years experience required: 5- 10 years of lab experience
- Strong candidates will have demonstrated interest in the immunology or vaccinology.
- Independently motivated, detailed orientated and excellent problem-solving ability
- Ability to make independent effective decisions
- Ability to multi-task and work independently under pressure
- Ability to work in a team environment, meet deadlines, and prioritize and balance work from multiple individuals
- Ability to effectively supervise others
- Must be willing to learn and grow
