Description of Work:
The Park Ranger II provides educational programming, natural resource management, law enforcement/emergency services, seasonal and permanent employee supervision, administration, operations, and maintenance to Pisgah View State Park. The Park Ranger II will supervise two journey level rangers and one seasonal position, and when required serve as acting park superintendent. The Park Ranger II will lead interpretive and educational activities for the public regarding the ecology and history of the park. The Park Ranger II will manage the park's boundary line maintenance program, monitor natural resources, serve as the park contact for public information requests, and will research assigned natural resources, develop and implement resource management plans and I&E programs. The Park Ranger II is a commissioned law enforcement officer and will enforce state laws and park regulations through patrol, education, warnings, citations, and arrests. The Park Ranger II performs and directs emergency medical response and emergency rescue on the park and provides assistance to other agencies. The Park Ranger II will have responsibilities for routine maintenance and minor repairs of park facilities, vehicles, and equipment. Operational duties include issuing camping permits, opening and closing facilities, and purchasing equipment and supplies. The Park Ranger II will manage the facility conditions of assigned park areas and lead or participate in assigned collateral duties. The Park Ranger II will assist other park rangers, office staff and maintenance staff with their assignments when more manpower is needed or staff is absent.

May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Pisgah View State Park
Authorized in 2019, Pisgah View is one of North Carolina’s newest state parks. The centerpiece of the unit will be created from land that has been operated as the Pisgah View Ranch. The initial acquisitions will result in approximately 1,600 acres of new park land. Pisgah View is full of unique habitats, cliffs, coves, and upland forests that are home to several rare plant and animal species. In addition to the Park Superintendent, there is already a Park Ranger II, Maintenance/Construction Supervisor II and Administrative Specialist I position approved for the park with more positions expected.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Technical Knowledge:
  • The ability to prepare and conduct educational programs;
  • The ability to manage a complex calendar of educational programing and outreach;
  • The ability to coordinate and manage seasonal and volunteer workers in a wide range of projects;
Protection & Safety:
  • Ability to perform in operations, facility upkeep and/or administration of parks, attractions, other outdoor recreation areas or other visitor focused entities;

Applicant must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and meet DOA Fleet Safety Policy guidelines.

Must successfully pass Basic Law Enforcement Training within 18 months of employment.

Within 12 months of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain:


  • Successfully complete CPR Certification;
  • Successfully complete Wildland Fire Suppression;
  • Successfully complete Division Sponsored Chainsaw Training

Within 30 months of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain:


  • Successfully complete Emergency Medical Responder (EMR);
  • Successfully complete Fundamentals of Search and Rescue (FUNSAR)
Prior to Employment:
Selected candidates are required to have successful results in physical and psychological examinations to include drug testing and a background investigation as required by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education, Training and Standards Commission.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree preferably in Parks and Recreation and/or Natural Science from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
