JOB SUMMARY: The Nutrition Educator provides the assigned program with guidance and information from collegiate, medical and professional resources about food and health that encourage and support healthy and equitable living for everyone.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide guidance and information about food and health to the assigned program and create related educational materials.
- Provide in-person and virtual workshops/presentations about nutrition education, healthy living habits, & budgeting/shopping for healthy foods to under served communities, SHARE host sites, and other appropriate program partners, as deemed so by SHARE management.
- Advise program partners, customers, and the community at large on nutritional principles, dietary plans, and food selection and preparation.
- Attend outreach events to promote nutrition education, the SHARE program, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
- Create media for lessons about healthy habits, cooking demonstrations with culturally relevant recipes, and the SHARE program.
- Create nutrition education content for SHARE’s monthly newsletter, webpage, and social media posts in conjunction with the Outreach team.
- Save all outreach and marketing materials related to Nutrition Education in the SHARE Food Network Marketing and Outreach SharePoint folder.
- Provide guidance in recipe selection, menu offerings and meal preparation.
- Coordinate recipe selections with present and upcoming monthly menu offerings.
- Organize, develop, analyze, and test special meals according to current/relevant nutritional focus.
- Ensure the purchase of food used for workshops and presentations is in accordance with health and safety codes.
- Inspect meals prepared during workshops and presentations for standards of palatability and appearance.
- Prepare records and reports as may be required.
- Participate in monthly food distribution events.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in dietetics, food and nutrition, nutritional sciences, human nutrition, or related field.
- Previous completion or concurrent participation of/in coordinated program or dietetic/ nutrition internship, under the supervision of a registered dietician, nutritionist or related professional.
- 3 years of work experience developing curriculum, presenting and training others.
- Must be able to complete Safe Food Handling certification within 3 months of start date.
SKILLS and COMPETENCIES:
- Ability to translate nutrition science into practical eating advice.
- Ability to communicate and explain complex things in a simple way.
- Skills in the use of computers, preferably a PC, Windows-based operating environment, and MS Office products.
