Job Description
Title: Instruction Librarian
Mars Hill University is seeking a new member for our library team who will bring enthusiasm and creativity to our research instruction & information literacy programs. Founded in 1856, MHU sits in the Blue Ridge mountains of Western North Carolina. About 2o miles north of Asheville, it is one of the most beautiful and culturally vibrant regions of the country.
Description:
The Instruction Librarian will work with the Director of Library Services and librarian staff to create, deliver, and assess research instruction for targeted first-year courses as well as courses within the curricular disciplines. The position will also take part in a full range of library activities, including public services, reference consultations, collection development, outreach, and special projects.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A master’s degree in library and/or information science from an ALA-accredited institution, completed by the date of hire
  • Experience delivering information literacy instruction
  • Experience providing reference services in an academic setting
  • The flexibility to work with others in a small team
  • The ability to adapt to the changing needs of the library (i.e., be a quick study)
  • Written and oral communication skills that are effective, responsible, and empathetic
  • Organizational skills that include data analysis and creating reports
  • A commitment to student-centered service

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience delivering research instruction in an academic classroom setting
  • Experience with assessment of research instruction for classroom sessions
  • Experience with assessment of research instruction in meeting the goals of specific programs (e.g., English composition)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technology that supports instruction and user-facing library services
  • Experience with management of electronic resources
  • Experience delivering research instruction for STEM disciplines in an academic setting

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver research and information literacy instruction in the classroom and virtual settings
  • Conduct about half of the library research instruction sessions
  • Consult with first-year writing faculty to determine how to best meet the needs and goals of the program
  • Schedule instruction sessions to ensure all faculty requests for library instruction are fulfilled
  • Develop instruments to assess student learning resulting from library instruction sessions
  • Report on instruction assessment and collaborate with other librarians to improve instruction learning outcomes, instruction methods, and assessment tools
  • Engage with incoming First-Year students to provide library orientation
  • Staff the reference desk, including some evening and rotating weekend hours
  • Provide reference services through a variety of electronic platforms
  • Manage the print & electronic reference collection, including making recommendations for the accession and deaccession of resources
  • Create and maintain reference and instruction materials and tools, both physical and electronic (e.g., LibGuides, subject bibliographies)
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Director or as part of a professional growth plan

Professional Responsibilities:
  • Actively contribute to general library planning, policy-making, goal-setting, and the development of new services and initiatives
  • Actively participate in professional and consortium organizations
  • Review professional literature related to areas of responsibility
  • Attend faculty meetings and serve on faculty committees as elected/appointed

Reports to: Director of Library Services
Status: 12 month, full-time with faculty status
