JOB SUMMARY
- Job Summary
- Collects specimens (blood, urine, swabs, etc.) from patients for analysis. Performs various screening tests. Covers for lab receptionist, goes to nursing homes for specimen collection when necessary, and other duties as assigned.

- High school diploma or GED. Completion of accredited phlebotomy program and two years previous experience preferred.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES
- Greets patient in a friendly, professional manner. Verifies or records identity of patient and converses with patient to allay fear of procedure. Adept and knowledgeable enough to double check patient’s orders in computer system when necessary and cancel duplicate orders. Also displays respect to all patients and co-workers in order to promote an efficient and effective healthcare team.
- Knowledgeable and skillful in specimen collection. This includes knowing specimen type, or knowing where to find that information, being able to perform routine venipunctures or finger-sticks with the least amount of discomfort and following all safety guidelines throughout the process, and labeling all collected specimens with appropriate information. Collects signed ABN forms when necessary. Additionally, enters collector’s initials, time of collection and whether or not patient was fasting into the LIS. Some specimen collections may take place at local nursing homes.
- Performs simple lab tests (i.e., bleeding time)
- Knowledgeable in the collection of specimens for substance abuse (urine, breath, saliva, and hair) and pain management. May include the use of reagent strips used to check for adulteration.
- Participates in programs, in-services, and department meetings as needed to maintain knowledge of specimen collections and accepted QMG collection procedures.
- Covers 2nd floor receptionists’ workstation when needed.
- Able to transcribe a patient’s order into the computer system.
- Other duties as assigned.
