CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: *
Under supervision of the Highway Maintenance Supervisor, and the Master Mechanic, performs work overhauling and repairing gasoline and diesel powered trucks, road construction and maintenance machinery. Must be able to and may perform duties of Light or Heavy Equipment Operator. Performs related work as required. Work is performed mainly in a shop setting. Employee receives limited instructions with respect to most assignments and is free to develop own work sequences consistent with established methods, procedures and requirements of equipment repair or maintenance. Work is checked through observation and conferences for accuracy and adherence to instructions and established regulations. Consequence of error may result in time delays, monetary loss and possible physical harm to others using defective equipment.

Examples of Duties

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
The following are illustrative and are not intended to be all inclusive or restrictive.

  • Replaces bearings on heavy and light motorized equipment.
  • Makes repairs to electrical or ignition systems of vehicles.
  • Dismantles, repairs and replaces broken or worn parts.
  • Services, maintains and repairs trucks, tractors, graders, sweepers, snow plows, pumping machinery, and other equipment.
  • Welds broken or cracked parts using electric or acetylene torches.
  • Services and repairs equipment at various locations throughout County.
  • Performs periodic inspection and preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Performs annual vehicle safety inspections as required by State.
  • Attend training as required.
  • Maintain required certifications for vehicle inspections.
  • Subject to Emergency Call 24 hours a day, weekends, or holidays.
  • Subject to random drug & alcohol testing.

Qualifications
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Any combination of training and experience providing the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Knowledge of the methods of repair utilized in the care of heavy road construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of the principles of all phases of gasoline and diesel mechanics as applied to both heavy and light equipment.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of mechanized equipment operations common to road maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of hydraulic systems inclusive but not limited to pumps, valves and hoses.
  • Skill in using welding equipment and oxy-acetylene torches.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools, equipment and diagnostic devices in a modern motorized equipment maintenance facility.
  • Ability to perform mechanical and manual labor often in rather inaccessible spaces and/or inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to read and understand repair manuals and diagrams and parts catalogs.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of the County's road system and location of equipment.
  • Knowledge of the mechanisms, uses and maintenance of the County's heavy and light motorized equipment used in the County's road operations.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to mechanized equipment.
  • Ability to repair and maintain all types of County motorized equipment.
  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
  • Ability to operate snow plows and related heavy equipment.
  • Ability to analyze repair problems, diagnose the problem and perform the repair.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with co-workers and parts suppliers.
  • Regular and timely work attendance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Technical college certificate in heavy truck and diesel mechanic program and two year related experience or equivalent combination thereof to perform duties of job.
  • Must possess a valid Minnesota Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement (Tanker endorsement and no restrictions for operating only automatic transmission CMV preferred).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The duties of this job include physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, standing, reaching, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds regularly, grasping, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, and repetitive motions on a regular basis. May require lifting additional weight on occasion. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus. Duties are performed mainly outside involving exposure to all weather conditions. The incumbents primarily perform highway maintenance tasks with a variety of equipment. They are exposed to maintenance hazards, such as: traffic, dust and dirt, and noise. During the maintenance of equipment, the incumbents are subject to potentially hazardous substances such as: silica dust, diesel fuel, gasoline, lubricants, and solvents. Required to report for work at any time in emergency conditions such as floods, snowstorms or other emergency conditions.

The application will be evaluated in a Training and Experience Assessment worth 100 points. Veterans Preference will be applied in accordance with Minnesota law. A score of 80 or better is necessary to continue in the process. A top group of qualified applicants will be invited to the interview process.

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a background investigation including a criminal history search. Costs of the background will be paid for by Isanti County.
