Job Title: Group Fitness Instructor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Part-Time

Reports to: Program Director over Health and Wellness

POSITION SUMMARY:

To further the purposes of the YMCA by building relationships and developing character in all YMCA constituents. Under the guidance and supervision of the Program Director, the Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for leading both beginning and experienced exercises in safe and effective group classes. The goal of this program is to assist members in making a healthy lifestyle change, to build self-esteem, and to encourage consistency. The role of the Group Exercise Instructor is to assist and inspire members as they participate in Group Exercise classes. The Group Exercise Instructor is expected to demonstrate a professional manner at all times when in the facility, including personal time spent in the facility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

In coordination with the Program Director, the Group Exercise Instructor shall:

  • Lead energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living.
  • Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Regularly checks all equipment to ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness
  • Keeps accurate class attendance records.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  • Abides by the safety, injury and illness, and prevention guidelines by taking personal responsibility for own safety and safety of program participants.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Requires HS diploma or equivalent
  • Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED, national certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.
  • Certification in areas of expertise.
  • At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to conduct classes and activities.
  • Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  • Must be able to lift and/or assist up to 50 pounds in weight.
  • Must be able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
  • Ability to withstand heat and/or cold weather conditions for lengthy periods of time.

EFFECT ON END RESULTS:

The Group Exercise Instructor fills a vital role for YMCA of the Pines. The effectiveness of the incumbent shall be measured by the degree to which the above goals are met.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
