THE COLLEGE AND THE SCHOOL
New York Medical College (NYMC) was founded in 1860 in Lower Manhattan. By the 1920s NYMC has moved uptown to 106th Street and Broadway and much of the clinical teaching was done at the Flower (named after a Governor of New York) and Fifth Avenue Hospitals and, hence, it was frequently referred to as the "Flower Fifth Avenue Medical School". NYMC was the first white majority medical school to offer scholarships to African Americans (1928) and completely ignored the prevailing anti Semitic admissions quotas prevalent in U.S. medical schools from the 1920s to the 1960s. In 1971, NYMC became part of the New York Roman Catholic Archdiocesan health system and the College moved to Westchester County, New York. After approximately 40 years of a relationship with the Church, NYMC joined Touro University - the largest private university in the US under Jewish auspices. NYMC is a member of a small club: the 1% of the colleges and universities in the US which are limited mission health sciences universities.
