POSITION SUMMARY

The AVP, Assistant Corporate Controller will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Corporate Accounting team to ensure that financial information is accurately captured and recorded in Berkshire’s Corporate financial statements. This position will work closely with the SVP, Corporate Controller, to provide complete and accurate internal and external financial reporting and analyses to the firm’s decision makers including Berkshire’s Leadership Team and its Board of Directors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversee, actively manage, and develop Corporate Accounting staff by delegating appropriate tasks for their level of experience and knowledge and providing sufficient oversight/guidance and feedback
  • Oversee the monthly and quarterly corporate closing process
  • Analyze and understand budget and forecast to actual MTD and YTD results
  • Oversee the preparation of the monthly and quarterly financial reports and perform a detailed review prior to submitting them to the SVP, Corporate Controller
  • Oversee the preparation of the monthly MF1 ProcessCo financial reports and perform a detailed review prior to submitting them to the SVP, Corporate Controller and our joint venture partner
  • Support the development of the Berkshire and MF1 annual budgets and quarterly forecasts, measure actual progress against them on a monthly basis, and report results as part of the Leadership and Board financial reports
  • Review and gain a working understanding of all revenue and reimbursement related contracts
  • Review all investment management, property management, and redevelopment fee calculations, ensure they are reconciled with the individual fund managers, invoice, and obtain Controller approval
  • Calculate partner distributions on a quarterly basis
  • Be the primary contact for accounting to Berkshire’s third-party insurance consultant
  • Support Berkshire’s internal control efforts by providing control guidance and support for the organization, ensuring our control narratives are reviewed annually by the process owners, enhancing internal controls as needed, and liaising with our internal and external auditors to ensure a smooth ICFR walkthrough and testing process
  • Ensure all controls within the department are followed
  • Provide oversight and support to our Treasury and AP teams
  • Perform other ad hoc duties as requested

JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge/Experience:

  • 10-15 years of accounting experience (public and/or private)/ Real estate or private equity industry
  • A self-starter with a track record of success and demonstrates continued career growth
  • Experience in managing, developing, and leading a team
  • Forecasting and budgeting experience
  • Experience with financial statements preparation and reporting required
  • Internal controls – Registered Investment Adviser/Sarbanes Oxley experience preferred
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to details
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to meet time sensitive deadlines and managing variable workloads

Technical/ Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting
  • Strong computer skills and ability to adapt to technology changes
  • Experience with Yardi a plus
  • CPA license and public accounting experience preferred

Speaking Requirements: (Clarity, customer interaction, presentations, etc)

  • Constant need to communicate over telephone and in person
  • Must be comfortable speaking in front of small, medium and large groups
  • Must be comfortable speaking to senior management

Driving Requirements: (Driving needs for the position – from property to property, travel, etc)

  • Travel is minimal for business, but driver's license is required if renting a car

Reasoning Development: (Low, Medium, High – for ability to apply logical thinking to defined problem solving)

  • HIGH
  • Must be able to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect pertinent data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and initiate appropriate course of action
  • Must effectively convey ideas, images and goals to a diverse group of personalities
