Job Description
Analytical Mechanics Associates, Inc. (AMA) of Hampton, VA (www.ama-inc.com) is actively seeking a motivated and experienced Aerodynamic Engineer to provide support in the area of applied aerodynamics. Overall responsibility will be the investigation and modeling of aerodynamics of blunt entry bodies and other vehicles being designed for planetary exploration missions, especially as it applies to entry, descent, and landing (EDL). The Engineer will participate in and coordinate experimental testing, aerodynamic database development, contributing to wind tunnel model and test design, supporting wind tunnel and ballistic range tests and data reduction, and performing CFD analysis. Wind tunnel support work may include some basic CAD modeling, 3D printing and general laboratory work to assist the wind tunnel team in building, programming and testing new subsystems as they are developed. Responsibilities

  • Compose test plans and provide support for different experimental techniques, e.g. wind tunnel, aeroballistic, free flight/drop test, forced oscillation, etc.
  • Collect and reduce data taken from test facility data acquisition systems.
  • Perform database implementation verification and validation with flight mechanics analysts and work with the aeroscience and flight mechanics teams to help create subroutines that adequately describe flight characteristics of blunt bodies in support of flight projects.
  • Supports certification and qualification processes of the aerodynamic characteristics of flight vehicles.
  • Perform CFD analyses for a range of vehicles throughout a large range of regimes (subsonic, transonic, supersonic, hypersonic).
  • Effectively communicate with team members in the participating NASA Langley branches as well as other mission team members and leaders at other NASA centers including JPL, Ames and MSFC. Communication will include personal discussion, written reports, oral presentations and conference or journal articles (as contributor or primary author).
  • Written documentation, technical memorandum, and conference/journal papers.

Requirements

  • Minimum B.S. in Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Experience/familiarity with experimental aerodynamics testing is critical. Background in dynamic aero is important.
  • Experience with CFD is required. Some training will be required, will learn specific CFD software determined by technical supervisor (FUN3D, OVERFLOW, LAURA, etc.).
  • Experience with Matlab/Simulink, FORTRAN, C/C++ programming, or similar.
  • Basic knowledge of UNIX/Linux computer systems.
  • Candidates must possess strong written and oral communication skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • A background in one or more of the following areas: aerodynamics through all velocity regimes (rarefied, hypersonic, supersonic, subsonic), entry descent and landing (EDL) design and analysis, launch vehicle analysis, flight testing including post-flight data analysis, simulation development, and parameter identification.
  • Candidates with advanced degrees are highly encouraged to apply.
  • Experience with analyzing CFD results for accuracy, and properly interpreting and presenting findings using commercial flow visualization software, such as Tecplot.
  • Experience in grid generation, numerical algorithms, and physical modeling of flight vehicles and vehicle components is desired.
  • An ability to create CAD models and CAD maninpulation/cleanup.
  • Knowledge and application of a scripting language (i.e. UNIX shell scripting, Python scripting, C/C++ coding) for automation of case setup and customization.
