Youth Attendance and Re-engagement Specialist Job at Wellpinit School District
The job of a youth attendance and reengagement specialist is to reconnect youth and families that have disconnected from education or are at-risk of disengaging to understand common barriers to school attendance and partner with schools utilizing tiered approaches to address chronic absenteeism while erasing equity gaps in attendance.
FUNCTION:
· Assists school personnel and takes lead in the development and implementation of student attendance plans.
· Assists students in further developing personal characteristics (i.e. stress management, coping mechanisms, and confidence) for the purpose of improving school attendance.
· Attends meetings as identified with the ESSER Attendance & Reengagement team as needed.
· Collects and evaluates data for the purpose of improving school attendance and student success.
· Conducts screenings, motivational interviews, interventions, and referrals for the purpose of identifying and addressing economic, academic, social barriers to determine the need for additional services and/or community-based referrals.
· Consults and collaborates with family members, young adults, colleagues, school staff, and
community agency personnel for the purpose of developing intervention goals, synchronizing service plans and providing comprehensive support to students.
· Develops and maintains a list of resources (i.e. social services and mental health services) while simultaneously developing relationships with community organizations, businesses, and programs for the purpose of providing services to youth with identified needs and to assist students in overcoming barriers.
· Maintains individual student records and files (e.g. evaluations, screenings, reviews,
intervention, etc.) for the purpose of assisting in student development, achievement, improving attendance, compiling and documenting activities in compliance with program evaluations, providing ongoing case management, services, and for communicating with others.
· Assists in the organization of workshops, meetings, and professional development, etc. on a regular basis for the purpose of developing staff and program participant awareness regarding youth & families that are at risk to or have disconnected from education with the goal of locating, removing barriers, and reengaging all students.
· Provide intervention strategies to increase attendance and reduce truancy in our region’s schools.
· Prepares a variety of written & electronic materials (e.g., case notes, statistical reports, student attendance plans, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing references, and/or conveying information. Enters data into written and electronic systems to track outcomes, performance, and progress toward goals.
· Utilizes a variety of motivational styles for the purpose of assisting students in reaching their goals.
· Conduct home visits.
· Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying assessment instruments, operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications, preparing and maintaining accurate records/case management, and utilizing group presentation skills.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages and/or ratios, read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: generally accepted substance abuse assessment, intervention, treatment, and recovery process for adolescents and families, chemical dependency counseling or prevention, physical and emotional development of adolescents, mental health issues, and understanding of college application process.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events, gather, collate, and classify data, and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances, work with data utilizing defined but different processes, and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and groups and work with a variety of data. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities, communicating with diverse groups in a nonjudgmental manner, working flexible hours, displaying patience and a sense of humor, understanding verbal input, responding quickly, and maintaining confidentiality.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate’s Degree or 72 credit hours of post-secondary education. High School Diploma or equivalent required. If no secondary education, must pass Washington State Praxis exam to demonstrate knowledge of ability to assist in student instruction. Must pass background check and drug test.

In addition, a background check based on finger prints, will be requested from the Washington State Patrol & FBI. Employment is conditional based upon completion of the record check. Must pass pre-employment drug test.
