SALARY: $42,500

LOCATION: Initially the primary office will be located in Portland, Maine, with potential to relocate a primary office location in York County in the future. SARSSM has a hybrid work policy where staff can work remotely two days per week.

ABOUT SEXUAL ASSAULT RESPONSE SERVICES OF SOUTHERN MAINE (SARSSM):

Since 1973, Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine (SARSSM) has provided free services in York and Cumberland counties to anyone affected by sexual assault, sexual harassment, or sexual abuse, through prevention programs, support, education, and advocacy.

ABOUT THE YOUTH PREVENTION & EDUCATION PROGRAM:

SARSSM’s Youth Prevention and Education Program uses a research-driven, primary prevention model to address the root causes of sexual violence, impact positive social change, and support our vision of creating a world free from sexual violence. We develop innovative, age-appropriate, and inclusive prevention education curricula geared towards students (grades K-college), and support and train teachers in effectively delivering the content. Our curriculum learning objectives include topics ranging from personal body safety, boundaries, gender and gender stereotypes, respect and consent, sexual harassment prevention, bystander intervention, and more.

YORK COUNTY PREVENTION EDUCATOR ROLE

This is a 24-month grant funded position with possibility for extension, paid for by the Office of Violence Against Women Consolidated Grant Program to Address Children and Youth Experiencing Domestic and Sexual Assault and Engage Men and Boys as Allies.

REQUIRED ROLE ON CRISIS AND SUPPORT HELPLINE:

All SARSSM employees are required to participate in a 40-hour advocate training and provide on-call coverage for our 24-hour crisis and support helpline. Shifts are on a 24-hour rotation and frequency is dictated by staffing/volunteer levels. Additional, on-call compensation is applied.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Core Functions:

  • Develop, update, and improve upon SARSSM’s school-based (Pre-K-12) prevention and education materials, curricula, and online ‘Educator Toolkit’.
  • Ensure that core learning objectives are delivered in a way that is engaging, relevant, age-appropriate, inclusive, accessible, and trauma-informed.
  • Assist with developing and facilitating in person and virtual trainings for educators related to best practices using our curriculums, creating trauma-informed classrooms, responding to students who disclose having experienced child sexual abuse, and outlined requirements by the Department of Education.
  • Provide on-call coverage for our 24-hour crisis and support helpline, including accompaniments for survivors in York and Cumberland Counties to local hospitals, police departments and courthouses as requested.
  • Provide technical assistance, consultation and support for educators using our curricula and materials.
  • Develop and facilitate in-school education that is engaging, age-appropriate, inclusive, accessible, and trauma-informed.

Community work:

  • Assist with developing and facilitating prevention programming for college students and campus staff
  • Provide opportunities for parents/caregivers to learn about child sexual abuse prevention
  • Develop and facilitate youth programming in youth and community spaces

Other:

  • Participate in community needs assessments and strategic planning, when applicable.
  • Increase youth engagement on our social media
  • Serve as the main point of contact for Prevention and Education initiatives and collaborations in York County
  • Participate in mandatory grant-funded projects and trainings as required by the Office of

Violence Against Women.

  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, team meetings, one-on-one supervision, clinical supervision, and community partner meetings.
  • Provide referrals for youth, non-offending parents/families, and youth-serving adults to access SARSSM and community resources.
  • Attend and participate in SARSSM fundraising events as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A degree in education, public health, child development, women and gender studies, social work, etc., or related professional work experience.
  • Experience working in the sexual violence/child abuse prevention or survivor advocacy field, or an understanding of the impacts of trauma on children is a prefered.
  • Experience in education, classroom instruction & facilitation, and curriculum development is preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of privilege and oppression, and how that impacts the lived experiences of youth, including LGBTQ+ youth and youth of color, immigrant and refugee youth, systems-involved youth, etc.
  • The ability to work in harmonious relationships with SARSSM staff, clients, community partners and law enforcement, and positively and professionally represent SARSSM in attire, manner, and behavior.
  • Ability to maintain strong boundaries when working with youth, to adhere to strict confidentiality policies, have discretion with sensitive information, and follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team, to exercise good judgment, work well under pressure, and engage in problem solving.
  • Ability to stay on task while working remotely and working on long-term projects.
  • Ability to remain flexible and responsive to evolving agency and community priorities, to manage time and work efficiently, follow work plans and meet deadlines.
  • Solid computer and technology skills and familiarity with Google Apps, Word, Excel, Canva, Zoom, social media platforms, etc.
  • Comfortability presenting on live and pre-recorded video.
  • Comfortability working in crisis intervention and advocacy work.
  • Ability to work on-call hours, including occasional evenings, weekends or holidays.
  • Must have reliable transportation and proof of updated auto insurance.
  • Must successfully pass state and federal criminal background checks and fingerprinting.

Must successfully complete a forty-hour sexual assault advocate training (post-hire).
