Reporting to the Executive Director/Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS), the Wellness and Health Promotion (WHP) Director provides direct oversight of all health promotion activities that address priority counseling and student health issues and trends to support the mission of the university. Establishes a campus-wide agenda to advance the mental and physical health of students and promote student development, retention and success. With authority, innovates and advises on all aspects of campus health education and promotion efforts and long-range goals for development of wellness and health promotion services. Develops, implements and monitors strategic plan/goals/objectives and creates and provides data and reports to key campus stakeholders. Provides expert consultation on areas of health promotion and prevention to campus constituents. Based on broad knowledge and experience, combines professional concepts and evolving campus objectives that have campus-wide and community impact to foster a health promoting campus environment.

The WHP Director is an experienced public health professional who provides leadership, overall direction, planning and management of the Wellness and Health Promotion unit including a team of health education and promotion professionals in various areas of wellness, including: Mental Health and Wellbeing; Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion + Anti-Bias/Anti-Racism (JEDI/ABAR); Sexual Health; Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug; Physical Health, and others. In this capacity, the WHP Director provides strategic direction in the design, development, administration, implementation, assessment, coordination, and continuous improvement of health-related programs, services, health education materials, communications, and social media; and health promotion policy, advocacy, campaigns, and initiatives that foster health, well-being, and harm reduction among the diverse population of 3,100 graduate and professional health sciences students at UCSF.

The WHP Director works in collaboration with and serves as a liaison to internal and external campus partners to provide strategic direction of Wellness and Health Promotion activities in relation to assessed campus needs, system wide programs and national trends. May include Student Health Advisory Committee, staff and faculty within UCSF professional schools and Graduate Division, UC Wellness and Health Promotion Directors, University of California Office of the President (UCOP) committees including the Student Mental Health Oversight Committee, and national groups such as Health Promoting Campus Network. Identifies strong campus partners to design long term vision of wellness initiatives. Conducts analyses to determine approaches, trends, and ‘best practices’ to address the unique issues of UCSF students with particular focus on prevention and early intervention.

Department Description

The mission of Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) is to optimize the physical and mental health of students to help them achieve academic success, personal development, and lifelong wellness. SHCS offers primary care services, mental health counseling and psychiatry services, health education and promotion, travel health advice, nursing triage and advice, health insurance support services, and local oversight of the UC Student Health Insurance Plan.

Wellness and Health Promotion utilizes a global, holistic view of health and wellbeing to support the wellness of person, place, and planet with particular focus on the prevention and early intervention portions of the wellbeing spectrum.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in related area or equivalent combination of education and work experience / training
  • Six (6) or more years’ experience of developing, managing, implementing, and evaluating health and wellness services programs or related work experience
  • Five (5) or more years of supervisory / management experience
  • Strong knowledge of medical field, health promotion and / or education programs
  • Knows delivery mediums as well as campus HR-related practices and procedures relating to supervision and management of assigned staff members
  • Strong knowledge of budget / fiscal-related matters
  • Strong presentation, written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong skills in decision-making, analysis, critical thinking, project management and organizational leadership
  • Strong interpersonal skills needed to interact effectively at all levels within and outside the campus
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with all levels of the campus community
  • Ability to establish priorities, goals and objectives, timelines, and delegate assignments, manage resources (HR and fiscal), to achieve goals and implement programs
  • Highly developed ability to achieve consensus in a diverse environment
  • Experience with traditional and state-of-the art strategies of health promotion, education, behavior change, environmental management, and evaluation
  • Analytical and program evaluation skills to effectively provide sound recommendations, continually examine systems, and develop or revise to accommodate change requirements
  • Interpersonal skills to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with administration, staff, visitors and volunteers, using tact, diplomacy, and good judgment during all interactions in the performance of a wide variety of programs
  • Oral and written communication skills to develop curricula, training materials, press releases, etc., and convey them to a diverse audience
  • Customer service skills to represent information and programs to faculty, staff, students, and the public
  • Experience with health promoting environments and/or Okanagan Charter
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to advancing Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity principles
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to advancing Anti-Bias and Anti-Racism principles.
  • Possess a working understanding of a public health approach to mental health, including suicide prevention and wellness promotion
  • Attuned to current needs and shifts in higher education and mental health, including suicide prevention, and help develop and support timely and responsive initiatives
  • Experience with MS outlook suite of tools (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with strategic planning
  • Background in university health services environment
  • Demonstrated experience within health promoting campuses/higher education environments
  • Decision-making skills to independently and effectively analyze situations and provide reasoned recommendations and fair and equitable decision-making
  • Collaboration skills to develop short- and long-range planning and program goals, to analyze and evaluate programmatic needs and recommend changes for effective operation
  • Knowledge of current evidence-informed strategies and theories to change health behaviors and reduce risks
  • Knowledge of social and macro environmental and policy influences on health behavior
  • Demonstrated collaboration and negotiation skills
  • Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in a university setting
  • Knowledge of LEAN tools and strategies
  • Experience working in an integrated care setting that includes mental health services.
  • Understanding of the role outreach plays if furthering a student health and counseling service’s mission, including reaching underserved populations
  • Understanding of the unique needs presented by a diverse student population
  • Knowledge of the mental health issues that impact student performance and success
  • Understanding of college student development
  • Experience with community organizing strategies and principles for prompting collective action.
  • Knowledge of Health Information Portability and Accountability (HIPAA) Act
  • Experience within University of California system
