This position will start on a Monday–Friday day shift schedule and eventually transition to a continuous operations schedule (24-hour/7-day). Overtime and weekend week may be required to meet critical deadlines.
Position Summary:
Multi-skilled individual conducts a full range of duties as assigned in the operation, maintenance, monitoring, and control of all wastewater facilities. Conducts a variety of operations and maintenance activities following the maintenance work process to optimize the wastewater facility and provide ongoing preventive maintenance and improvement support to a pre-determined maintenance plan.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Operates, maintains, monitors, controls, and repairs all water/wastewater plant process equipment, including pumps, motors, blowers, chlorinators, chemical feeds, sludge equipment, and basic laboratory instruments to ensure treated water meets city, state, and Environmental Protection Act (EPA) quality standards
- Obtains water samples and performs water or wastewater lab tests
- Conducts various lab tests to determine proper process and operational controls
- Recognizes the need for and makes basic treatment and operational changes to the water and wastewater processes and distribution systems to meet water quality standards
- Changes pump settings as needed
- Monitors and adjusts flows through wells, booster pumps, zone splits, and reservoirs to control the distribution system and system pressure
- Monitors and operates telemetry system and computerized process monitoring equipment
- Makes equipment adjustments, lubrications, and minor repairs and/or prepares problem reports
- Reads and interprets meters, gauges, and instruments. Enters daily readings into computer databases
- Inventories, estimates usage, and prepares orders for supplies. Ensures quality of material received
- Resolves water and wastewater complaint calls
- Unloads and stores hazardous chemicals, changes chlorine cylinders as necessary, batches and mixes hazardous chemical solutions and transfers bulk storage to day tanks for chemical feed operations
- Assists other water treatment personnel in the performance of remote facility maintenance
- Records daily activities in logbook
- Assists with public relations by answering inquiries and complaints and giving plant tours
- Train lower-level operators
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Transfer of operational tasks such as lubrication and inspection
- Ability to build technical procedures
- Train other technical resources
- Participate in problem solving for line improvements, deviations, Safety and Quality failures. Not limited but including Basic Fishbones and Breakdown Analysis (BDAs)
- Work with your team to make recommendations on how to improve the operation to optimize facility with positive contribution to all Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Participate in the review of the preventative maintenance plans, planned downtime events and early management activities related to area.
- Access and utilize Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to accurately document all maintenance activities
- Identify and create work orders
- Perform time entry and technical feedback on work performed
- Improve Maintenance Plans
- Review required spare parts to ensure accurate bill of materials
- Utilize digital tools and tablets to input data into CMMS
- Follow safety & environmental objectives & targets, follow the plant safety rules, report incidents & unsafe conditions immediately, maintain compliance with regulations, and refer to the Safety & Environmental Management System(s) on all related procedures and programs
- Capability to follow work standards and full adherence to all safety permitting and facility Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) requirements while executing tasks
- Follow all required Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP), quality and food safety requirements. In addition, employee shall notify their supervisor or other designated personnel of all quality or food safety findings or incidents
- This position has been identified as a safety sensitive position
Education and Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Grade 2 or 3 certified within Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) guidelines required
- Experience in the operation and maintenance of water and/or wastewater treatment plants and related facilities
- 5+ years of wastewater experience preferred
Working Environment:
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize work while multitasking.
- May be exposed to loud and distracting noise levels
- Usually working indoors however may be subject to extreme heat/cold temperatures
- Comfort with exposure to moving mechanical parts and automated equipment
- When required, must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including (but not limited to) bump cap, safety steel toe shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, clothing, and footwear in appropriate areas and follow safety practices
- Ability to understand hazards of chemicals and materials and safely handle them
Physical Requirements:
- Standing/walking for long periods of time
- Duties require standing, walking, hand dexterity, good sense of balance (climbing, stooping, kneeling, and crawling)
- Good ear, nose, sense of feeling and far vision to evaluate equipment being repaired
- Able to lift/push/pull max 50 lbs. (if exceeds 50 lbs., use teamwork and proper equipment)
- Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception
- Frequent use of computers and other technology necessary to perform job duties, including handheld electronic equipment
