Vice President, Accounting and Finance Job at Joni and Friends
Duties
Under the supervision of the Chief Financial Officer, support the overall objectives of Joni and Friends’ Accounting and Finance department. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Management
- Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals and objectives
- Maintain and enforce well-documented systems of accounting policies and procedures
- Serve as principal conduit of same to the rest of the organization, communicating in person, in writing, and via electronic boards and formal reporting
- Manage and make recommendations for Cash Flow, Treasury Investments, and Cash Reserve Policy
- Supervise and maintain a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk and enhance the accuracy of the organization’s reported financial position and activity
- Design and develop an electronic archive and filing system to organize and store documents substantiating all balances and postings to the ledger, and to ensure compliance with associated naming and versioning conventions and with procedures for indexing substantiating documents to journals
- Serve on the JAFF Investment Committee and verify proper compliance of investments per the Investment Policy Statement
- Implement and manage processes and procedures for international transactions in compliance with Federal and OFAC guidelines
- Guarantee the organization and its Foundation are in compliance with GAAP and international financial reporting standards
- Maintain Accounting and Finance web page, and other communication to the field and the company related to controls and processes for the accurate and early capture of data
- Responsible for maintaining a level of communication that is productive, clear, and succinct for non-practitioners
- Transactions
- Timely payment of accounts payable
- All reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable
- Prompt collection of accounts receivable
- Bank reconciliations are completed promptly
- Ensure the reconciliation process is complete and signed off by Development, Accounting, and CFO
- Support month-end, quarterly, and year-end close process
- Intervene on behalf of the controller function to mitigate tardy delivery of information, in support of one-time reporting deadlines
- Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
- Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
- Responsible for research, documentation, and resolution of exception transactions, and oversight of same by reports and staff, if assigned
- Reporting
- Oversee the preparation of quarterly financial reports and perform analysis for the International Board of Directors including a summary of results and next quarter projections.
- Conduct or review variance analysis of actuals to budget and to prior periods, providing narrative of the analysis to the CFO and President/COO
- Review and present Investment Performance analysis quarterly to JAF leadership and the JAFF Investment Committee chairperson, including recommendations, as needed, to maintain portfolio compliance with investment policy
- Issue timely and accurate financial statements
- Manage and work closely with Capin Crouse regarding accounting and tax items
- Coordinate the preparation of the organizational audited financials and Form 990
- Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of the organization’s operations, and oversee preparation of internal management reports, adding narrative to the numbers to present to the CFO and President/COO
- Monitor key financial and operating metrics
- Manage the production of the annual budget and forecasts
- Work closely with JAFF Investment Committee and investment advisor regarding JAFF investments and endowment
- Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
- Provide financial analyses as needed, in particular for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations
- Compliance
- In coordination with the controller role, coordinate the provision of information to external auditors and tax preparers, correspondingly for the annual audit and annual return
- In coordination with the controller role, monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants
- In coordination with the controller role, ensure compliance with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
- Other departmental projects that may be assigned by the Supervisor/Other Leadership
- Other projects and assignments as necessary to support the overall strategic plan of JAF
Qualifications
- Must possess a vibrant personal relationship with Jesus Christ and agree with the Joni and Friends statement of faith
- Desire to serve in a growing and dynamic Christian service ministry
- Prefer 10+ years of accounting experience with progressive responsibility
- Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred in Accounting or Finance
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills both verbal and written
- Ability to effectively organize and prioritize a wide range of daily tasks with varied deadlines
- Must be detail oriented, committed to accuracy, a team player and self-starter who is flexible and able to work independently
- Must have a strong sense of confidentiality
- Strong general computer skills are necessary along with a competent, working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Blackbaud products such as Financial Edge
- Ability to genuinely relate and balance the mission of the organization to one’s professional responsibility
- Familiarity with system conversion and data migration
- Ability to lead and manage in an environment of transition
- Understanding of Christian ministry and specifically Joni and Friends is desirable
