Upper School Mandarin Faculty (Seattle, WA)
Part Time (20% FTE) Salary/Exempt
Academic Year Schedule (2023 - 2024)
The Upper School Mandarin Faculty member reports to the Upper School Director and works closely with students and families, as well as Upper School Faculty and Staff. This position will be responsible for teaching one section of Mandarin I per term. The corresponding class schedule will be to teach one, ninety-minute class two or three times per week on a rotating weekly schedule at different times of the day.
While other duties may be assigned, a qualified candidate will be able to manage the key responsibilities and tasks listed below:
Create and sustain a positive classroom culture, based on the mission and values of the school
Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional activities for Upper School Mandarin I course that facilitates active learning experiences and supports a proficiency approach to language instruction
Possess the ability and skills to successfully teach the beginning levels of Mandarin, including level 1 and 2.
Value and incorporate diverse perspectives in daily interactions and within the curriculum
Establish classroom expectations that create a safe and comfortable environment for all students
Create and sustain effective family partnerships, for example: communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress and classroom news via formal fall/spring conferences, written communications, and school portal
Observe/evaluate/assess students’ development and maintain accurate records regarding student progress and areas of growth
Develop and implement a proficiency-oriented interdisciplinary, multicultural, experiential curriculum
Collaborate with other members of the World Languages Department to create common experiences centered on student inquiry
Create and sustain effective family partnerships, for example: communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress and classroom news via formal conferences, written reports, and school portal
Communicate openly, timely, and supportively with students, staff, parents, and other stakeholders regarding student achievement and progress
Observe/evaluate/assess students’ development and maintain accurate records regarding student progress and areas of growth
Collaborate with school counselors and learning specialists to plan lessons, curriculum, materials, and resources to effectively serve students with different learning profiles and mental health needs
Utilize technology to support student success (e.g. Google Docs, Google Classroom and Learning platform)
Conscientiously complete other duties as assigned
Experience and Professional Competencies:
Experience in teaching Mandarin required, with 3 or more years preferred
A bachelor’s degree is required
A graduate degree is preferred

Have a current Adult and Children CPR, First Aid and AED Certification (or receive one soon after hire date)

Faculty employees with a Master’s degree, PhD and/or National Certification may be eligible for additional compensation
