The role:
As a Transitional Housing Youth Advocate, you will supervise and care for clients during assigned hours, while providing an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust. May work both daytime and overnight hours, as scheduled. Ensures that all basic needs of participants are met, and that the youth are provided a safe, stable environment in which to work toward independence.
What you will need:

• A High School Diploma/equivalent is required.
• One year of full-time experience in a human service field is required. Experience should include working with high-risk youth.
• Knowledge of parenting, child rearing techniques and age appropriate behavior for children is essential.
• 21 years of age (for insurability purposes) and a valid Iowa driver’s license is required.

What you will do:

• Supervise participants during assigned hours, which could include day, evening, and weekend shifts and an on-call rotation expectation.
• Relate to participants in a caring, supportive manner, while enforcing program rules and guidelines consistently, firmly, and fairly.
• Oversee participant activities such as chores, curfew, personal hygiene, departure and arrival when requested to do so by the Advocate/Program Coordinator.
• Supervise participants and ensure they provide adequate parental supervision (if applicable).
• Be aware of participants’ guests, monitor their actions in terms of lease agreements, and ask them to leave if needed.
• Assist participants in meeting basic needs such as food, clothing, bedding, personal care products, transportation, and safety. May take youth to outside sources to meet these needs if necessary.
• Provide crisis intervention to participants as needed. Alert “On-Call” staff of major incidents or emergencies.
• Assist in health education and care of prenatal / post-partum women, and infants or children.
• Inspect facility for maintenance problems and report issues to Case Worker that cannot be resolved.
• Assisting with all participants needs of moving into an apartment and getting their place furnished. This includes moving them into the site.
• Assist participants with transportation to appointments, DHS, job hunting and other program related activities as needed. Once they are program oriented this will include assisting in getting their own transportation (vehicle, drivers license, filling out bus applications, HIRTA, etc.)
• Work with participants on life skills, such as cooking, laundry, grocery shopping, budgeting, interpersonal relationships, personal hygiene, anger management, self-esteem, social skills, problem solving, job searching, job maintenance, transportation, and leisure activities.
