Transfusion Medicine Opportunity at the University of California, San Francisco
The Department of Laboratory Medicine is seeking a Transfusion Medicine specialist for a faculty position at the Moffitt-Long, Mt. Zion and Mission Bay Hospitals of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). The selected candidate will be appointed at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level in either the HS Clinical or Clinical X or in Residence career tracks at UCSF, depending on qualifications and interests.
Transfusion Medicine Faculty provide medical oversight and medical direction for blood transfusion services at all four UCSF Hospitals (Parnassus, Mission Bay and Mt. Zion in West Bay and BCH-Oak in East Bay). The physician team consists of five physicians, with this recruitment focused on a Medical Director primarily overseeing services at UCSF facilities in the West Bay. The Medical Director works with staff in our Transfusion Service laboratories to ensure procedures for testing and matching blood products are updated and appropriate as well as consulting with UCSF clinical teams on appropriate utilization of blood products. Clinical responsibilities for the Medical Director include coverage of in-patient and out-patient transfusion services at UCSF Health. Our Transfusion Service Laboratories issue more than 50,000 blood products per year and support a wide range of organ and bone marrow transplant, critical care, and surgical services for adult, pediatric and neonatal patients. This position may also involve work in cell therapy development for clinical and translational research use. This effort is led by the Cell Therapy GMP lab, managed by Laboratory Medicine faculty.
The successful candidate will work with other Transfusion Medicine Faculty to implement the academic mission of the UCSF Clinical Pathology service, which includes training of residents and fellows. In particular, the fellowship program includes training in cellular therapy methods and applications.
Candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD in health-related fields or equivalent degree(s), have or be eligible for a California medical license, and be board-eligible/certified in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine by the American Board of Pathology. Candidates with interest and/or research experience in Cellular Therapies are preferred. Prior experience in medical direction of blood bank laboratories or clinical transfusion services is desirable, though recent graduates from Transfusion Medicine fellowships are welcome to apply. The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5: https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2022-23/oct-2022-salary-scales/t5-summary.pdf. The minimum base salary range for this position is $135,700-$360,600. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan (https://ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/apm/apm-670.pdf) which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
