Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Temporary Research Assistant in the Child Health Institute of New Jersey Department of Psychiatry at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Under the direction of Dr. Mark Rossi (PI), the Temporary Research Assistant (TRA) will be responsible for the performance and analysis of experiments focused on studying the involvement of the hypothalamus and associated brain regions in regulating feeding and obesity. The project is part of the lab’s goal to understand how the brain orchestrates motivated behavior and how it is altered in pathologies such as obesity, addiction, or eating disorders using in vivo calcium imaging, optogenetics, and electrophysiology.
Under the direction of Dr. Mark Rossi (PI), the Temporary Research Assistant (TRA) will be responsible for the performance and analysis of experiments focused on studying the involvement of the hypothalamus and associated brain regions in regulating feeding and obesity. The project is part of the lab’s goal to understand how the brain orchestrates motivated behavior and how it is altered in pathologies such as obesity, addiction, or eating disorders using in vivo calcium imaging, optogenetics, and electrophysiology.
The TRA is expected to have experience in conducting and analyzing scientific experiments involving rodent models and in neuroscience and cellular biology techniques, such as genotyping, survival surgery, histology, microscopy, or coding. The TRA will be responsible for maintenance and genotyping of the mouse colony and will assist with ongoing research projects in the lab. The TRA will also be responsible for ordering reagents and supplies as well as collaborating with the PI in monitoring how the resources are used in the lab.
As part of their career development to transition to the next stage in their career, the TRA will be trained on improving their scientific reasoning, experimental design, and practical laboratory skills and their written and oral presentation skills.

- Assist in performing and analyzing experiments to understand the roles of hypothalamic cell types in regulating food intake and body weight regulation through data collection and analysis.
- Perform animal husbandry and genotyping on the mouse colony to generate the experimental animals, monitor animal health, and follow all animal protocol rules and regulations.
- Order supplies and reagents in the lab and monitor their availability and usage.
- Assist with instruction and training of undergraduate students in laboratory techniques.
- Compile and analyze data with appropriate statistical analysis, conclusions, and future directions in support of further CHI research.
- Adheres to established performance standards and coordination of instrumentation and experimental approaches in support of CHI research.
- Keeps clear and detailed records of procedures and experiments in accordance with laboratory guidelines, maintain data in shared and readily accessible locations, present data to the PI and other lab members.
- Works collaboratively and independently with laboratories and researchers within CHI and Rutgers.
- Attends and actively participates in both weekly and monthly group research meetings.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- Recent B.A. or B.S. in Biology, genetics, neuroscience, biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, psychology, computer science, mathematics, biomedical engineering, or relevant biomedical sciences.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Must have effective oral and written communication skills and ability to understand and communicate in English to sufficiently perform the job duties.
- Must have the ability to work collaboratively and independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in conducting and analyzing scientific experiments involving rodent models and in neuroscience and cellular biology techniques, such as genotyping, survival surgery, histology, microscopy, or coding.
- Prior laboratory experience working with rodents.
- Experience with coding in Python.
