POSITION: Temporary Natural Resource Technician I

SALARY: $15.78/hour

REPORTS TO: Assistant Hatchery Manager

LOCATION: Chief Joseph Hatchery, Bridgeport, WA

Basic Functions: At the Chief Joseph Hatchery, this position serves as an entry level technician for assisting with the fish marking program. This position assists in the loading, clipping, and tagging of juvenile fish for the hatcheries production groups. Work elements include, but are not limited to, assisting in setup of marking trailer, loading fish via nets or fish pump, hand clipping adipose fins and placement of Coded Wire Tags (CWT), performing fish culture work as directed, and scientific day-to-day operations as needed. Incumbent may assist in the collection of biological data such as: scale samples, length, weight, and conducting pound counts. Incumbent will also be required to assist with daily duties at Chief Joseph Hatchery. These duties include, but are not limited to: capture and spawning of adult Chinook, taking biological samples for disease monitoring, picking and sampling eggs, feeding juveniles and adjusting growth rates, cleaning troughs, raceways and circular ponds and assisting in maintenance of all facilities. This position may require heavy lifting, pulling, and hauling in all kinds of weather conditions on variable terrain.

Qualifications

Education and Training:

  • HS Diploma or GED and satisfactory work history.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of fish marking programs and clipping fins.
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures of common hatchery practices.
  • Knowledge of data collection.
  • Knowledge of fish culture and adult salmon identification, handling and spawning.
  • Ability to use standard field equipment
  • Ability to collect biological data from fish (weight, length, gender, origin, etc.)
  • Ability to work and hike in inclement weather conditions and over variable and rugged terrain.
  • Ability to swim and work safely on boats, docks, and catwalks around swift moving, cold water.
  • Ability to work variable hours, long days, early mornings, holidays and weekends as the work dictates
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and possess good hand/eye coordination
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Ability to do basic math and communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain better than average attendance during an exceptionally busy season for the marking crew.
  • Work history must reflect solid performance and no serious performance, attendance or other disciplinary issues with any employer over the previous year. Verification of past performance will be accomplished by reference checks.

Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.


TRIBAL MEMBER AND INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY; PREFERENCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED.


If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
