Kodak is Hiring! Technical Safety Scientist

The Technical Safety Scientist evaluates the likelihood and consequences of thermal runaway and explosive decomposition reactions in synthetic chemical manufacturing to minimize the risk of fires and explosions. Responsibilities include assessing thermal stability, reactivity and flammability of process chemicals and reaction mixtures using experimental data, structure/reactivity relationships, and correlation methods and provide recommendations for safe chemical handling during manufacturing, storage, and transportation. This position provides critical information to support Kodak’s Process Safety Management program and interfaces with Chemical Manufacturing Operations, Health Safety & Environment and Engineering departments.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:
  • Provide recommendations for safe chemical handling and manufacturing based on thermal data and calculations during Management of Change (MOC), Process Safety Reviews (PSR) and Process Hazard Analysis (PHA).
  • Evaluate thermal stability, reactivity and explosivity of potential new chemical manufacturing processes.
  • Request the necessary thermal and reactivity testing and analyze test results.
  • Provide regulatory classifications for flammability, explosivity and reactivity and provide recommendations for the safe storage, transportation, and handling of chemicals.
  • Maintain and update the databases containing chemical safety data, calculations, guidelines, process review files
Requirements:
  • Knowledge in physical and organic chemistry including kinetics and thermodynamics and processes modelling
  • Knowledge of chemical manufacturing equipment and processes
  • Willingness to learn and gain knowledge through self-directed learning and from a mentor, runaway decomposition reactions, thermal stability, vent sizing, scale-up of test results, hazardous reactivity of chemicals, flammability, risk assessment, worst credible scenario analysis, and regulatory requirements in the field of explosivity, reactivity and flammability
  • Able to organize and coordinate multiple requirements/ projects/ processes simultaneously
  • Effective written and oral communication skills; able to express oneself clearly and in technical and non-technical terms
  • Demonstrated leadership and decision-making skills
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Ability to work efficiently with little to no supervision.
  • Ability to work well with others as an effective team player
Education and Experience:
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, or related field. Masters or PhD preferred
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in a chemical manufacturing environment
