Job Summary:

The primary focus of the R&D Associate role will be to support research and testing activities in the laboratory that will advance our core aluminum-water chemistry, support customer funded programs and drive new research project opportunities. While the underlying chemistry has been proven and de-risked, we continue to optimize our anode, cathode, and electrolyte materials to push our battery capabilities further. In parallel, we are exploring innovative ways in which to utilize our aluminum-water system to bring additional value to the maritime power industry.

The day-to-day responsibilities will include setting up and running electrochemical experiments to test new electrode and electrolyte materials and working with the R&D team to support other ongoing research and testing efforts. The individual will work with senior members of the R&D team to learn how to process, interpret, and analyze data from these experiments, and collaboratively decide on follow-up experiments. In addition to aiding in the execution of experiments, there will be opportunities for you to take ownership of various projects. This individual would work closely with the rest of the R&D team and interface with the other engineering groups (electrical and mechanical) to drive the implementation of new developments.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the R&D team to execute experimental plans
  • Support customer funded testing activities
  • Analyze and communicate results to the R&D team
  • Help run and maintain experimental equipment
  • Troubleshoot and solve issues before, during, and after experiments
  • Maintain a safe and open work environment

Qualifications:

  • GAP of 3.0 or greater
  • Pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, or related field
  • Candidate must be a US citizen or Green Card holder

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a laboratory environment
  • Experience with electrochemistry a plus

Open Water Power (OWP) has developed an aluminum-water (Al-H2O) battery technology with a 2-10x improvement in energy density vs. alternative chemistries, currently focused on undersea energy delivery.

OWP operates a 20,000 square foot high-bay facility in Somerville, MA. The facility supports a team of ~30 staff who have on-site access to a full wet chemistry research lab, research-grade equipment for characterization of electrochemical processes, a materials characterization lab, environmentally-controlled test chambers, and temperature-controlled test tanks for vehicles and sensors. OWP’s facility also supports full in-house production of Al-H2O systems from proof-of-principle through low-rate initial production (LRIP). Open Water Power is a wholly owned subsidiary of L3Harris Technologies, located in Somerville, MA.
