POSITION OVERVIEW
The Specialty Chemicals business unit is a fast-growing business within Ascend Performance Materials. Specialty Chemicals strategy relies on significant growth from new product and new application initiatives. The Specialty Chemicals Process and Product Development Chemist will focus on new process, application and product development for near-term growth opportunities within the Ascend Specialty Chemicals business area, focused on Decatur, AL site raw materials and product portfolio. The position offers a challenging environment with opportunities for growth in technical experience and personal development.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work on new product and application development efforts enabling near term growth for the Specialty Chemicals business.
  • Design, execute, and document research projects from conception through piloting. Will also assist the Process Engineering group in scale up and commercial efforts.
  • Assist the manufacturing organization in developing and maintaining process chemistry understanding.
  • Act as a primary interface between internal and external customers and suppliers as well as outside research labs and institutions related to process chemistry initiatives.
  • Responsible for setting up and running bench and pilot-scale experimental testing to aid in research work.
  • Prepare verbal presentations and written reports to communicate project status and results
  • Work with Quality Control group in developing analytical methods for new products and processes.
  • Participate on small teams to effectively complete fast-moving projects.

TEAM
  • The Specialty Chemicals Technology Group consists of chemists and chemical engineers who collaborate in small groups on multiple value added projects. The overall team comprises 8-10 people and the project teams are usually 1-3 people in size.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry with strong emphasis in organic synthesis and industrial chemistry with 1-2 years of experience.
    • Will consider BS/MS with +5 years of industrial synthesis experience.
  • Experience with amines, carboxylic acids, aldehydes, organic nitriles, cyanide chemistry and hydrogenation reaction chemistry in an industrial setting is highly desirable.
  • A strong skillset in analytical chemistry, including method development, for analytical laboratory instrumentation such as GC, HPLC, GC/MS, ICP, DSC, TGA, FTIR, etc. is a plus.
REQUIRED SKILLS
  • Good understanding of organic, physical, and analytical chemistry and measurement techniques.
  • Capable of working independently with third-party institutions and vendors as needed.
  • Ability to work and function efficiently with other lab and manufacturing unit personnel in a team environment.
  • Ability to take ideas from concept to implementation with a strong emphasis on applications, scale up, and piloting.
  • Good communication, strong analytical and technical skills, good organization skills, and a keen interest for problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with toll production of chemicals is a plus.
