ABOUT OUR JOB
The Signal Technician I or II is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing computerized traffic signals and related equipment. You would become part of a hard-working Traffic Operations team dedicated to delivering top-quality service for the traveling public and pedestrians, who uses their experience to improve and maintain our systems of signals and lighting to help increase the quality of our community for the benefit and protection of our citizens and visitors.

Signal Technician I:
Ability to read, understand and apply information from technical manuals and websites; practical knowledge of diagnostic equipment; performs testing, inspection, and diagnosis on traffic control devices to accurately identify and repair issues. Installs and maintains traffic signals; installs traffic loops or signal detectors; diagnoses and troubleshoots malfunctions in traffic signal devices; performs preventative maintenance; repairs and replaces signal heads and hardware; locates loops for construction and road repairs; performs troubleshooting on traffic signals controllers, signal lights, and related equipment such as wiring, conduit, inductions loops, various types of communication and solid-state logic controllers.- Practices good judgment at all times and know whether to take action or ask for direction when answers to a problem are not readily apparent in unclear circumstances; analyze information, problems, situations, practices, or procedures in order to define the problem or objective; prioritize assignments in order to complete work in a timely and efficient manner; perform effectively with frequent interruptions and/or distractions, workload changes, fluctuations, and competing demands.
- Works in a manner safe to the individual and other people; keeps work area clean and safe; follows safety rules and safe work practices; uses safety equipment as required. Identifies safety hazards and report unsafe conditions to supervisor; follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, assists with traffic control/safety at work sites, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags traffic through/around work sites sets up detours, safety cones, barricades, barrels, and road/warning signs.
- Completes appropriate work-flow reporting; maintains accurate service maintenance records; performs general and preventative maintenance tasks necessary to keep shop area, vehicles, equipment, and tools in safe and usable conditions at all time; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety, reports faulty equipment and maintenance needs; monitors parts and shop supply levels and notifies appropriate personnel of replenishment needs.
- Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with projects, which may include a sign truck, bucket truck, flatbed truck, trencher, forklift, skid steer, concrete/asphalt saw, bench grinder, torch, air compressor, generator, hydraulic post driver, post puller, shovel, electrician tools, plumbing tools, carpentry tools, mechanic tools, landscape tools, or hand tools.
- Works with various computer programs such as MS Office suite, drafting software, City Works, and ArcPro.
- Assists City Traffic Electrician with electrical maintenance by replacing components of street lighting and various electrical systems, miscellaneous wiring projects, and underground electrical locates.
- Inspects new signal installations to ensure compliance with appropriate codes and guidelines; ensures that traffic signal installation, placement, markings, and related activities are conducted in compliance with applicable traffic control device regulations, standards, and specifications; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations.
- Maintains an inventory of traffic signals, parts, supplies, and related materials; ensures adequate supply levels to conduct work activities; initiates requisition for new/replacement materials to include sourcing, price comparison, ordering, and receiving.
- Maintain database systems to track maintenance activities, signal configurations, wiring diagrams, conduit plans, shop diagrams, and damage repair claims.
- Assists with the design of traffic signal phasing and sequencing, placement of induction loops, sizing cables, wiring, and locating junction boxes for signalized intersections; proposes and develops changes in timing sequences, phase timing and flash times; writes specifications for traffic signal equipment.
- Assist with new employee orientation and training; provides guidance and oversight for lower level team members; may be required to serve on safety and other committees, as needed. Communicate committee activities to staff and supervision, and represent staff feedback effectively in meetings.

Signal Technician I:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one-year certificate from college or technical school preparing for electronics technology or electrical wiring and up to three years related experience in the field related to traffic signal operations and construction, or
- Any such combination of education, closely related experience, and training that may be acceptable to the hiring authority.
- Must possess a South Dakota Electrical Apprentice license—ability to obtain ATSSA Traffic Control Technician level certification, or comparable.
Signal Technician II:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and Associate Degree from college or technical school preparing for electronics technology or electrical wiring and more than three years related experience in the field related to traffic signal operations and construction, or
- Any such combination of education, closely related experience, and training that may be acceptable to the hiring authority.
- Must possess a South Dakota Electrical Journeyman license or have the ability to obtain one within one year. Ability to obtain ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor level certification, or comparable.
