The Communications and Marketing (CM) team is responsible for overseeing the organization’s communications and marketing efforts to grow the organizations three highest priority areas: AP, SAT Suite, and BigFuture. Communications is a close-knit, dedicated team with a successful track record of promoting the work of College Board to a wide range of audiences including students, parents, educators, policymakers, the media, member organizations and staff.
BigFuture is a free, online planning guide that helps all students take the best first step after high school. Informed by students, career experts, colleges, and over 100 years of College Board research, BigFuture is a comprehensive set of digital resources that millions use yearly to plan for college, pay for college, and explore careers.
About the Opportunity
As Senior Director, BigFuture Communications, you will develop clear, compelling messages and identify effective communications channels to connect with key audiences and help inspire students to take their best next step post-high school. Your job will be to flood the market with the relevant stories that matter. Your words will connect with students and their supportive communities of caring adults, teachers, educators and counselors.

You will have a role in developing strategic communications direct-to-consumer audiences and direct-to-business audiences. You will work closely with the Vice President of Communications and the Senior Vice President of BigFuture to guide the public perception and reputation of BigFuture, and drive achievement of BigFuture’s ambitious growth goals. You will serve as an internal consultant and subject-matter expert on all external and public-facing engagements and will work closely with other teams and divisions including BigFuture Growth Marketing, BigFuture Student Engagement, BigFuture College Board Search, Partnerships, Research, Technology, and all aspects of the broader BigFuture team, including product management and development, in ensuring a unified, focused, and compelling BigFuture voice.

This position reports to the Vice President, Communications.

In this role you will:

BigFuture Communications Strategy & Development (50%)
  • Serve as lead communications strategist and practitioner for BigFuture through direct-to-student communications as well as draft communications for services that support financial aid and recruitment services for our higher education audiences.
  • Design and execute end-to-end strategic communications plans for the BigFuture consumer brands and provide support for all products and services under the BigFuture umbrella to include College Board Search.
  • Develop an editorial calendar that identifies key inflection points and proactive outreach opportunities for BigFuture
  • Lead messaging for executives at events and on media engagements, working closely with Media Relations to identify media opportunities; prepare leadership with talking points and generate appropriate collateral material (press releases, media advisories, talking points, etc.) in a timely and organized manner.
  • Maintain a pulse on key audiences (students, parents, counselors, K12 and higher education) and identify effective, high-profile media and public speaking opportunities for BigFuture leadership.
  • Develop and manage the use of comprehensive communications collateral including talking points, FAQs, one-pagers, PowerPoint presentations, webinars, talking points for senior leaders, print and digital collateral, and white papers that distill complex information, research, and data into easily consumable messages for internal and external stakeholders
  • Work with Communications colleagues to drive storytelling and highlight validating voices of support showing how BigFuture supports students on their path

BigFuture Communications Execution & Management (50%)

  • Lead the development and execution of turnkey messaging for audiences, with a particular focus on students, that helps further the mission of BigFuture and aligns with program goals
  • Develop communications strategies to reach and connect with diverse communities, including African American, Latino, and Indigenous students and their families
  • Develop messages, in coordination with our marketing and product teams, that funnel through key channels (email, text, web, and social platforms, etc.)
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all internal and external communications for BigFuture
  • Serve as Communications lead for cross-functional projects related to BigFuture
  • Serve as communications liaison among the BigFuture, Media Relations, Marketing, and broader Communications teams
  • Consult internally on reputation management and broad strategic engagement with students
  • Work closely with BigFuture product, Technology and Marketing teams to translate audience needs into simple, clear, effective audience-specific messaging
  • Train colleagues including senior executives on BigFuture messaging

About You
Required:
  • Extensive experience crafting communications strategies and messaging
  • A progressively responsible 7+ year track-record of professional communications -related successes.
  • Communications experience with direct-to-consumer, product-oriented brands
  • Experience working with Gen Z
  • Travel 1-2 times per quarter

Highly desired:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or a related field
  • 2+ years of communications and/or marketing experience working with students and/or consumer-based audiences
  • Experience in crisis communications and issues management, including managing stories in national, top-tier media outlets
  • A strong understanding of the education landscape
  • A background that includes direct support of a prominent senior leader, including staffing for media events and preparing briefings
  • International experience

We believe in compensating staff members fairly in relation to each other, their qualifications, and their impact. The salary range for a new employee in this position is 114,000-155,000
The salary offer of an individual candidate within this range is specific to their location and qualifications.
