NV5 is seeking a full-time Senior Biologist (Bat Focus) for our Cary, NC office. The Senior Biologist will provide technical expertise and assistance associated with environmental services projects with primary focus on bat related projects. The individual should have field experience and the necessary permits, skills, and experience to capture, handle and identify eastern United States bat species.
- Responsible for project management duties on assigned projects.
- Lead, coordinate and conduct bat surveys, including mist netting, acoustics, bridge and culvert surveys.
- Work well with others in environmentally challenging field conditions
- Oversee collection and interpretation of field data and preparation of technical reports
- Communicate between staff, managers, agency personnel and clients.
- Complete project tasks within deadlines and budgets.
- Participate in field work, data collection, and technical report preparation of other natural resource related projects including wetland delineations, stream determinations, permitting and other species surveys.
- Equipment and vehicle maintenance, prep, and decontamination
- Hold, or currently a subpermittee on a USFWS Section 10 recovery permit allowing capture of (at a minimum) eastern bat species (Indiana, northern long-eared, and gray bats, with the ability to add tricolored bats)
- Recent rabies pre-exposure vaccination or titer check within the last two years
- BS degree in biology, ecology, wildlife or similar curriculum
- Excellent writing skills and ability to interpret and present field data in technical reports
- High level of attention to detail and organization
- Ability to perform work at night and willingness to travel for consecutive days/nights with the potential for frequent schedule changes
- Experience with acoustic equipment (ANABAT preferred) and software analysis
- Willingness to assist other environmental services staff with varying project work including aquatic (fish, mussel, etc) surveys, wetland and stream delineations, and formal ESA Section 7 consultations
- Must be comfortable with computers and submeter handheld GPS units or other similar GPS based survey equipment.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license and pass a drug screen prior to employment
- Current NCWRC permit for bat species
- Possess strong wildlife and plant identification skills and assist with various surveys, including but not limited to, bats, birds, insects, fish, mussels, plants, wetlands, etc.
- Experience with transportation-related projects
- Familiarity with the ESA section 7 consultation process
- Experience with transmitter attachment, roost tree searches and foraging telemetry data collection
- Strong background in acoustic data analysis, including species identification
- Demonstrable experience with preparation of Biological Assessments and/or Habitat Conservation Plans;

- This position will be subject to outside environmental conditions, including weather conditions such as wet and /or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments.
- Some work will be in the field involving long term standing and frequent walking as well as include common hazards at project sites.
- Ability to carry heavy equipment (approximately 50 lbs.) long distances in field conditions
- Must be able to wade in water, walk over rough and uneven terrain and be able to walk and/or stand up to 10-12 hours a day on occasion.
- Additional physical duties may be required as necessary.
