Scientist 3 Job at South Florida Water Management District
The Coastal Ecosystems Section at the South Florida Water Management District seeks a science professional to provide technical and programmatic support to the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan’s (CERP) system-wide monitoring, assessment, and evaluation (RECOVER) program. The incumbent will serve as a Regional Coordinator for the Northern Estuaries module, which includes the St. Lucie and Loxahatchee River Estuaries on the Atlantic coast and the Caloosahatchee River Estuary on the Gulf coast.
Duties for the position include contract management and participation in RECOVER seagrass, oyster, benthic infauna and fish monitoring programs as well as various assessment, evaluation and reporting activities related to the Northern Estuaries. The incumbent will lead or aid in the development of CERP performance measures, serve as a point of contact between CERP Project Management and RECOVER, and participate in environmental sub-teams of CERP project teams and other regional planning activities. Finally, the incumbent will contribute to Coastal Ecosystem Section tasks and responsibilities including participation in field sampling efforts, laboratory processing, and administrative duties.
The incumbent should have demonstrable abilities in technical, oral and written communication. Experience in marine or estuarine science is required. Experience with communicating complex scientific topics to a diverse audience that may include members of the public, water managers, and policymakers is desired. The incumbent must also possess a fundamental understanding of scientific inquiry, hypothesis development, experimental design, data interpretation using statistical tools, and reviewing and writing technical documents and monitoring reports, which may include statistical or other data analyses.
Education/Experience Guidelines:
Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s preferred) in natural or physical sciences and 2+ years of qualifying experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within a scientific discipline that can be applied to support District goals and objectives.
Licenses:
A valid State of Florida Driver’s License is required.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment:
Ability to work in estuarine environments in South Florida. The candidate must be able to swim and snorkel in coastal and estuarine environments. Ability to trailer and captain a small watercraft is preferred, but not required.
Due to the District’s response role in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
