- Employment Opportunities in Temporary Positions:
Some vacant positions may be temporary. Temporary positions may be extended year to year, dependent upon funding and departmental needs. Making yourself available for temporary positions increases your employment possibilities and may lead to permanent opportunities. A person hired for a temporary position may also become a temporary employee upon satisfactory completion of the initial probation period of at least six months. Once a temporary employee, you would be eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent as well as other temporary positions. You may also enjoy other rights and benefits as afforded to an employee in a permanent position, with the exception of return rights and placement rights associated with a reduction-in-force.
- Job Summary:
Patrols a school campus to detect improper conduct or possible hazard, to prevent or discourage disturbances, loitering or other unacceptable student behavior, and to provide practical assistance to students as needed; enforces school rules and regulations; observes and reports any unusual occurrences or property damage; and performs other duties as required.
- Applicants must meet all the requirements for the position they are seeking as of the date of the application, unless otherwise specified. Unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently.
Note: Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour workweeks. Part-time experience is pro-rated. Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours/week is equivalent to six months of experience, not one year. Also, hours worked in excess of 40 hours/week will not be credited. Example: Twelve months of experience at 60 hours/week is equivalent to one year of experience, not one and a half years.
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:
- Registration Requirement:
Applicants must be registered as a Guard with the State of Hawaii Board of Private Detectives and Guards, in accordance with Act 208, Session Laws of Hawaii 2010.
Experience Requirement:
Six months experience (paid or unpaid) which demonstrated the ability to meet and deal effectively with people and the ability to read, comprehend and apply written directions.
The requirement for the ability to work with people may be met from part-time and unpaid work. There must, however, be evidence that participation was on a continuous basis but not necessarily on a full-time, normal-work basis. Examples of acceptable part-time/ unpaid work: 1) a person who reported once a week for a few hours to assist in the supervision and guidance of groups of boys and girls in connection with such organizations as the Boy Scouts, Police Activities League (PAL) and POP Warner League or 2) a person who has performed volunteer work at the Hawaii State Hospital on a regular and continuous basis, reporting once a week for a few hours to assist in the care of patients. An example of acceptable part-time work is work as a salesperson.
The experience requirement may be met by graduation from high school or equivalent.
