Purpose Statement:

The purpose of the position of School Bus Mechanic is to provide the daily repair and maintenance service on a variety of school buses, automobiles, and heavy-duty equipment to assure their safe, effective, and efficient operation in a timely manner.


This position reports to Transportation Fleet Manager


Minimum Qualifications

  • Pass a criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Utah Driver's License and Evidence of Insurability
  • Minimum two years diagnosing, repair and preventative maintenance of heavy equipment and other motor vehicles.
  • Have or obtain a CDL License with School Bus Endorsement within 90 days of hire
  • Have or obtain Utah state safety inspection license within 12 months of hire
  • Work with limited supervision, prioritize, be attentive to details, and meet strict deadlines and schedules with frequent interruptions
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with diverse groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and positive working relationships with co-workers, students, parents, and other district employees
  • Adaptable to changing work priorities
  • Able to roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Speak, read, write, analyze, and follow written and verbal communication in English; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing; present information in front of groups of people

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum two years' experience diagnosing, repair and preventative maintenance of school buses.
  • ASE Certification (Master School Bus Mechanic)
  • Any certification/s from engine and or body manufacturers
  • Certifications in any alternative fuel vehicles (including electric)
  • Degree in the automotive field

Essential Functions

  • Assists in the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of all district vehicles.
  • Follows prescribed preventative maintenance procedures on all vehicles.
  • Performs services and repairs on school buses, including but not limited to, diesel engines, injectors, pumps, automatic and standard transmission repair and replacement, wheelchair lifts, air brake systems and electrical systems.
  • Responds to school bus driver needs and maintains a positive working relationship with school district employees and students.
  • Responds to emergency road calls during and after regularly scheduled work hours as needed.
  • Performs functions of a school bus driver substitute when needed for the purpose of meeting the district's transportation service needs.
  • Participates in continuing educational training for new techniques and job skills as requested.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to use most major medium duty electronic diagnostic tools. (Cummins Insite, Allison DOC).
  • Promotes high standards of safety and housekeeping methods in work-connected areas.
  • Drives equipment in and out of repair shop; operates and road tests repaired vehicles to ensure proper function.
  • Maintains vehicle repair records including the nature of the repair, labor hours, and parts used in making repairs.
  • Performs diagnostic inspections on automotive and other motorized or stationary equipment to identify problems, using mechanical, electrical, and electronic testing equipment.
  • Talks to equipment operators, drives, and operates vehicle, or uses diagnostic equipment to identify problems and malfunctions.
  • Assists in other district and department transportation related needs as required.

  • Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 75% walking, 20% standing, and 5% sitting. This job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
