As a research institute of the University of Maryland, the National Foreign Language Center (NFLC-UMD) works to define the current and future language needs of the nation and helps build the capacity to meet those needs.
Position:
The NFLC-UMD seeks instructors to teach advanced Russian classes from February 22, 2023, to March 28, 2023. Instructors are also required to attend paid professional development for 24 hours that should happen between February 13, 2023 and February 21, 2023.
The five-week classes are designed for professionals with advanced proficiency in Russian. Instructors must be native speakers of Russian and have native or near-native skills in English. The instructors might be invited to teach additional periods in spring 2023, depending upon performance. This is a growing program with the potential for more steady work in the future.
Duties:
Instructors will be responsible for a class of six students with advanced proficiency in
Russian for five weeks. Instructors will be required to teach in person approximately 20 hours per week at the NFLC-UMD office in Riverdale, MD. The NFLC-UMD will provide a fully developed curriculum, including lesson plans and assessments, designed around authentic language learning materials; instructors will be responsible for delivering classes using this curriculum. Instructors are expected to foster active student participation and engagement in the classroom and provide feedback on assessments after class as needed. Instructors are expected to use the current best practices for world language education in their teaching. To this end, instructors will receive paid professional development from the NFLC-UMD to ensure they are prepared to employ these practices in the classroom.
The NFLC cannot sponsor visas, so all candidates must be authorized to work in the United States.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must have a bachelor’s degree.
- Must be a native speaker of Russian.
- Must have a minimum of one-year experience teaching Russian.
- Must be energetic and engaging in classroom.
- Must have excellent communication skills.
- Must have native or near-native proficiency in English.
- Must be available to teach in person at the NFLC-UMD offices (in Riverdale, Maryland) between the hours of 8:00 AM-4:00 PM (Monday-Friday) for five weeks.
- Must be able to familiarize themselves with technology such as Zoom and Canvas.
- Must comply with the University's up-to-date vaccination protocol or to request and be approved for a medical or religious exemption (https://umd.edu/4Maryland)
Preferences:
- Master’s degree
- Three or more years of teaching experience
- OPI experience or familiarity with the ILR scale of language proficiency
