What you will do...

Respite is a service designed to give the parents/guardians of the participant a break from providing care for their participant. Working one-on-one, the Respite Provider will ensure the safety and security of the individual at the individual’s home or in the community. The Respite Provider will be responsible for assisting the individual with tasks to be accomplished within their scheduled hours. These responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, assisting the individual complete their daily chores, activities and goals, help to prepare dinner, engage the individual with music, games, crafts, or other activities of their choice. Some support with hygiene may be required. The Respite Provider’s responsibilities will vary depending on the hours/times of day they are supporting the family.

Our Respite Providers may provide community and/or in-home direct services to individuals with various developmental disabilities between the ages of 3 to older adulthood. The Respite Provider works directly under the supervision of the individual’s family and will receive oversight by a Communitas Family Support Coordinator.

  • The rate of pay for this position is between $15 - $20+ per hour. The pay rate is dependent upon experience of Respite Provider and job responsibilities, which vary depending on the individual’s behavioral and/or medical needs. Respite Providers are generally paid directly by the family, however other options are possible.
  • The hours vary depending upon the individual and their family’s needs. Respite may be provided on an occasional or weekly basis, or potentially over the course of a weekend period if the family desires an overnight away from the home.
  • Respite providers generally often do not have consistent weekly schedules, the number of hours may vary. A Respite Provider will have the opportunity to decline providing respite if the hours asked by the family do not fit their schedule. Once a Respite Provider commits to working a certain day/time, it is expected that they follow through with that commitment.
  • The location will vary depending upon the family the Respite Provider is paired with. Once a Respite Provider is hired, they will identify families they would like to potentially work with, based upon the location and hours needed. Communitas currently has families in need of Respite Provider all around the Middlesex area.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Work with individual and family to achieve goals identified by the individual, family, and Family Support Program.
  • Complete all necessary documentation to assure compliance with Communitas and DDS policies. (documentation is very limited, consisting of brief weekly case notes, biweekly timesheets, and incident reports when necessary).
  • Ensure the rights and dignity of all people supported is upheld at all times
  • Develop and maintain supportive working relationships with program members.
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality for all information, and facility operations

Qualifications and Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Ability to assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem
  • A valid driver's license, acceptable driving record and reliable transportation is required.
  • Successful candidates will be required to complete a background check including references, CORI and fingerprinting.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $15.00 - $20.00 per hour
