JOB SUMMARY:
The Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) provides, under medical direction, respiratory care services to patients with disorders of the cardiopulmonary system. According with physician prescription, the RCP provides diagnostic testing, therapeutic, and respiratory monitoring services.
EDUCATION:
Graduate of a respiratory therapy program approved by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association (AMA) so as to qualify for examination and licensure by the California State Respiratory Care Examining Committee as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
EXPERIENCE:
One - two years recent experience in respiratory patient care and respiratory care technology in an accredited acute care facility preferred.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:
- Current licensure by the California State Respiratory Care Examining
- Committee of the Medical Board, as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
- Current CPR certification at the BLS (Healthcare Provider) level.
- Current NRP certification preferred on hire or must obtain within six months of hire. All existing employees must obtain certification by 9/1/08.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains current BLS Healthcare Provider, state licensure and TB screening.
- Under physician prescription, assembles/disassembles administration apparatus for medical gases, environmental control system (mist tent), humidification, aerosol, medication, ventilatory support, bronchopulmonary drainage, chest physiotherapy, breathing exercise, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and airway management.
- Responds to cardiac and respiratory arrests, assisting in establishing emergency airway and maintaining ventilation. Assist in other phases of CPR, as directed.
- Performs specific testing to assist physician in diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and evaluation of cardiopulmonary pathology including but not limited to: measurement of ventilatory volumes, airway pressures, gas flows, and other related physiologic parameters.
- Provides clinical assessment and respiratory patient monitoring; evaluates patient's respiratory status and condition by interpreting arterial blood gases, auscultating the chest, measuring oximetry and capnography. Confers with nurse, physician, and other health professions regarding of patient's respiratory status and ordered therapy.
- Observes infection control policies.
- Performs various procedures to establish and maintain adequate airway care and suctioning through the use of oral and/or nasal airways.
- Documents and maintains records of patient treatment and response to therapy in the patient's medical record, department billing and quality assurance.
- Leaves written report regarding patient care prior to shift change.
- Reports malfunctioning of equipment, ensuring that all equipment is clean and in working condition. Performs appropriate decontamination and cleaning of equipment prior to sterilization. All discontinued equipment is to be processed by end of the working day.
- Participates in department in-service training, continuing education activities, and development; maintains current, active credential status.
- Instructs patients and/or family in the operation and cleaning of various home health care equipment. Assists patient care unit staff as needed, with referrals to vendors for home respiratory equipment after patient discharge.
- Assists with clerical and other duties as assigned.
- Assists with orientation of new staff as assigned.

- Employee in this position most be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care and/or service based on the physical, psych/social, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients (either inpatient or outpatient) served in his/her service group.
- Employee in this position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide assistance to physicians and nursing care of patients with disorders of the cardiopulmonary system.

The protected health information a person in this position can access includes demographics, date of service, insurance/billing, medical record summary information, and all other information that may be contained in patient records. This position requires patient health information to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.
