The Role:
ArcelorMittal Global R&D is seeking a highly skilled and motivated engineer/scientist with a strong background in hot rolling of steel and proven record of accomplishments in the Product Development. The candidate should have a strong background in physical metallurgy of steel, as well as good understanding of hot rolling process. The prospective candidate will work independently and collectively with project teams to design steel compositions suitable for production in ArcelorMittal facilities, with a focus on AM/NS Calvert, conduct experiments on steel samples, examine microstructures and measure mechanical and other properties. He/she will design and conduct laboratory trials; design and actively participate in mill trials to develop hot rolled products. Prospective candidate is expected to provide support to address customer complaints/challenges and propose technical/technology development projects to enhance our service to the customer. The job will be based in the East Chicago center of ArcelorMittal Global R&D but will support ArcelorMittal plants and research projects globally. A high level of technical competency, teamwork, project management skills and excellent interpersonal skills is required for being successful for this position. Travel both domestic and international is also a requirement of the position.
Job Responsibilities:
- Be responsible for development of new hot rolled products for Energy and Industry Markets.
- Oversee mechanical testing, microstructural evaluation, modelling, and simulations pertained to product development.
- Provide technical support to AM plants and selected customers.
- Must work collaboratively with Quality, Technology, Operations and Commercial personnel, Global R&D colleagues, Universities and most importantly, with customers.
- Generate and present technical reports.
- Will travel to plants, customer locations as well as sister laboratories in the US and overseas.
- Perform other duties as required.
Minimum/Basic Requirements:
- Knowledge of steel manufacturing processes including steelmaking, continuous casting, and hot rolling.
- Knowledge of microstructure evaluation tools (SEM, EBSD, TEM).
- Strong knowledge of thermodynamics and kinetics of steel processing.
- Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
- Strong Project management skills: demonstrated the ability to push projects over the finish line with sound planning and persistent execution;
Preferred Requirements:
- At least 5 Years of experience in steel products.
- Knowledge of statistical analysis, such as six sigma
- Knowledge of hot rolling and/or hot rolled products, pipe & tube production.
- Experience in the use of advanced analytical microscopy
- Familiarity with digital tools
Education Requirement
Minimum/Basic Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Materials/Metallurgical Engineering.
Preferred Requirements:
- PhD degree in Materials/Metallurgical Engineering.
