This position is part of the Warren Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery (WCNDD) at Vanderbilt University where traditional academic pursuits in basic science are extended to advance our understanding of human disease and drug targets to directly impact patient care. The position calls for a creative scientist to join the Medicinal Chemistry group within the WCNDD. Under moderate supervision, design and implement the synthesis of target molecules associated with WCNDD research projects. Strong communication skills are required including recording and reporting results. It is necessary to be a highly motivated person with the ability to go above and beyond the job description to benefit the WCNDD.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Under minimal supervision, plan, design and synthesize target molecules.
  • Interpret SAR data and incorporate DMPK data into future ligand design
  • Understand and follow experimental protocols (including but not limited to proper safety protocol, proper equipment procedures, etc.)
  • Record, compile, interpret, and communicate analytical data (LCMS, NMR, etc)
  • Provide appropriate written/oral documentation of experiments
  • Follow Warren Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery safety protocols (may include use of combustibles, biohazardous materials, and/or carcinogens)
  • Contribute to a fully functioning discovery team with strong communication skills and in some cases mentor junior chemists
  • Be open to collaboration and interaction within the WCNDD team (DMPK, pharmacologists and behavioral scientists) and also other collaborators outside of WCNDD
  • Highly motivated individual with the ability to go above and beyond the job description to complete the task
  • Provides a friendly demeanor, polite, positive attitude and enjoys coming to work
  • Assist in group responsibilities that may include the inventory of consumables, clean glassware/lab space, and restock general area. Assist in the efficient operation of the lab.
Qualifications
  • The most competitive candidates are likely to have a B.S. in chemistry and 2 years’ experience, but an M.S. in chemistry is preferred.
  • The soft skills for the role include: working in a team-based organization, clearly communicating results, ideas and concerns, and clearly presenting targets at team meetings.
