Department Overview:
The Gibbs Laboratory in the Biomedical Engineering Department at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon, USA is recruiting a research assistant II with a background in synthetic organic chemistry to work on development of novel fluorophore technology to improve surgery.

Our team is actively working towards the development of novel fluorophore technology to highlight both tissues to be resected (e.g., cancer) and tissues to be preserved (e.g., nerves) to improve surgical outcomes for patients using clinically translated fluorescence guided surgery technologies.

We are looking for motivated chemists to join our multidisciplinary team to contribute to this highly translational project. Applicants must have a background in chemistry with synthetic experience preferred. Applicants should submit a cover letter explaining their interests, a CV, and a list of references.

The Gibbs laboratory is well support by the NIH and engages in a range of studies to develop novel fluorescence imaging to improve medicine.

Function/Duties of Position:
  • Synthetic design and development of novel fluorophores to specifically highlight tissues in the body for fluorescence guided surgery
  • Analytical chemistry to identify and verify synthetically developed compounds.
  • General lab maintenance, cleaning and organization of materials
  • Attendance and presentation at lab meetings, contributions to publications as requested (writing, figures, data), contributions to applications for funding as requested (writing, figures, data)
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's in relevant field OR Associate's AND
    3 years of relevant experience OR
    4 years of relevant experience OR
    Equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Strong synthetic chemistry knowledge and design novel synthetic schemes. Must have excellent communication skills and work as part of a research team.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • B.S. in chemistry.
  • Experience with small molecule synthesis, particularly fluorophores is highly preferred.
Additional Details:
This position is located RLSB on OHSU’s south waterfront campus; work hours are 8am – 5pm with occasional evening and weekend work as needed, however, evening and weekend work will be necessary on occasion to meet project deadlines. Special working conditions or hours are possible by advanced discussion and explicit approval by Dr. Summer Gibbs.

Ability to work for up to 8 hours at a time. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures and extensive literature review. The worker is also required to have close attention to detail to facilitate successful synthetic generation of novel small molecules.

Additionally, the worker needs to work well in a team setting requiring excellent communication skills. Ability to move about campus in a timely manner in support of the research and mission goals of the department. Ability to communicate complex ideas to collaborators and co-workers.
