Scope & Responsibilities of Reliability Engineer I: (Not limited to)
The Reliability Engineer provides technical assistance and support for refinery equipment which includes documentation to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation and maintenance. They assist in implementing various changes in the refinery to ensure compliance with applicable standards. The reliability engineer will be a cross functional team member to address both tactical and strategic reliability improvements. Individuals in this role will trouble shoot problems and provide support with repairs/upgrades to fixed and rotating equipment. They will work closely within the mechanical integrity group and lend a hand when inspection is needed. This position will work directly with the Mechanical Engineers and Inspection Technicians.
  • Make recommendations to implement and/or expedite repairs on failed equipment as well as improve designs of process equipment.
  • Develops maintenance procedures for the maintenance shops to work by.
  • Provide technical assurance support to Process Engineering, Project Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance.
  • Provides input on current systems and offers suggestions for moving forward.
  • Conduct field performance tests on equipment as needed; looks for and takes action to improve system reliability.
  • Participate in review team for bid packages, specifications, design, and fabrication drawings, and recommend manufacturers for capital projects.
  • Maintain awareness of repair costs to ensure company is getting adequate return on investment.
  • Lead the development of MOC’s that are discipline specific and participate in MOC’s that require cross-functional review.
  • Serve as technical lead with in-shop and off-site equipment repairs/rebuilds and develop or review operation procedures for plant equipment.
  • Contribute to or lead refinery incident investigation teams to determine root cause(s) for equipment failures.
  • Participate in reviewing spare parts and spare equipment strategy for new and existing equipment.
  • Participate in safety activities and safety training.

Education & Experience for Reliability Engineer I:
  • BS in mechanical engineering or relevant engineering discipline.
  • Working knowledge of API, ANSI, ASME standards is desired.
  • 5+ years mechanical equipment experience in refinery setting preferred.

Other Qualifications of Reliability Engineer I:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle license.
  • Highly effective people skills with demonstrated ability to work on teams.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft office and maintenance management system.
  • Good working knowledge of basic business principles such as finance, accounting, etc.

COGNITIVE DEMANDS: includes the ability to meet deadlines, focus attention, work independently or within a team, perform repetitive tasks, assess spatial relations, communicate effectively, read, and comprehend, interpret information, organize, think critically, and troubleshoot.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: seeing, speaking, hearing, smelling, kneeling, stooping, sitting, walk/climb/crawl, stand/reach, listen, writing, physical coordination, driving, climbing, twisting/bending, depth perception, assembling parts, keyboarding, push/pull/lift/carry or otherwise transport 50 pounds.

Must be able to walk, climb towers, stairs, scaffolds as needed to access equipment; some work at high elevations and in confined spaces is required.


Work in various indoor and outdoor environments in extreme heat or cold with exposure to hazardous materials.

Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and moderate noise levels.

Able to wear Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) and use all types of respiratory equipment including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

Occasional travel may be required.
