General Definition and Scope of Job

Performs a variety of nursing procedures and specifically those related to breast disease detection, evaluation and the education of individuals and groups of the medically correct methods for detecting breast tissue changes. Helps plan, arrange, implement and evaluate the total breast care program.

Job Status: Part Time, 48 hours every two weeks

What are the Minimum Skills, Experience and Educational Requirements?

  • A High School graduate or equivalent and a graduate of an approved school of Nursing.
  • Must have a current Registered Nurse license with the Michigan Board of Nursing.
  • Current BLS Certification.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak the English language sufficiently to communicate accurate and tactful explanations to people who may be under some stress and to maintain all necessary record keeping.
  • Must be able to implement the Nursing Plan of assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation.
  • Must have the ability to educate patient and public on breast health issues.
  • Must have the ability to work well with minimal supervision exercising sound judgment, integrity, resourcefulness, and professional attitude and leadership ability.
  • Must have the ability to successfully complete general orientation and the clinical skills guides of a Breast Evaluation Center Nurse.

What are the Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities?

  • Maintains established departmental policies, procedures and objectives related to quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Utilizes effective communication skills in interpersonal relationships with patients, physicians, guests and other members of the Health Care Team.
  • Demonstrates the willingness to accept responsibility and the motivation and initiative to carry out the tasks and assignments delegated to him/her within one’s scope of practice.
  • Performs breast assessments and examinations according to established medical practice standards and maintain complete and accurate records of same.
  • Observes and evaluates the patient’s progress and understanding of breast health and breast disease; and assumes responsibility for documenting this in the medical record.
  • Records the abnormal results of mammography such that clinical correlation of mammography results and pathology results can be performed and reported as required by ACR guidelines and regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinates the patient flow within the Breast Clinic to ensure that operating activities meet the direction given by the Medical Imaging Manager.
  • Participates in and assists with educational programs for nursing, other ancillary personnel and the public. Utilizes teaching/learning principles in providing staff development programs. Acts as an educational resource for breast care information.
  • Assists with office/clerical duties in the absence of clerical support staff.
  • Places orders and charges in the Hospital Information computer as necessary.
  • Schedules patient examinations when necessary according to departmental policy and procedure and gives pertinent preparatory instructions for the test.
  • Obtains the patient’s name, date of birth, phone number and MPI number if known.
  • Obtains pertinent clinical history that supports the procedure being ordered and consults the ordering physician or nurse when the information is inadequate.
  • Secures all necessary supplies to maintain a prudent inventory level for patient care.
  • After appropriate training and competency, performs breast prosthetic fittings and specialty undergarment fittings for mastectomy patients.
  • Enhances professional growth and development by participating in educational programs, workshops, current literature and in-service meetings. Obtains the necessary continuing education credits to maintain current licensure.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

What are the Critical Demands of the Job?

  • Must be able to handle multiple demands and make decisions about priorities.
  • Must have the ability to assist in a number of nursing procedures including breast biopsies and needle localizations.
  • Must be able to stand at length as needed to perform examinations.

  • Potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other infectious diseases.
  • Occasional exposure to limited amounts of ionizing radiation.
  • Lifts supplies and small equipment associated with the above.

  • Must be able to tolerate wearing protective gear including, but not limited to, barrier gloves, moisture impervious lab coats, protective eye wear, and face shields.
