The Refractory Technician will report to Service Manager.
Refractory Technician
McLaughlin Furnace Group’s fast-paced shop currently has an immediate opening for a detail-oriented refractory technician. The Refractory Technician will assist in all refractory aspects of installation, remodel, and maintenance of industrial heat treat systems using materials such as fire brick ad ceramic fiber. Candidates for this position must be self-motivated and will work closely with management, engineering, customers, and vendors on a daily basis.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Installs and maintains heat treat furnace systems on site.
- Inspect prints to plan work details and material requirements.
- Assist production and manufacture of equipment in the shop.
- Communicate technical information clearly and effectively.
- Direct or assist in demolition of old structures as required.
- Complete detailed and accurate service and expense reports.
- Performs various types of rough and finish masonry: bricking, pouring forms, grouting, and insulation of furnaces.
- Cut and fit masonry materials to any form as required in the erection of structures involving arches, curved, or angular shapes.
- Interpret blueprints and equipment manuals.
- Adhere to McLaughlin and customer plant safety policies and work efficiently per Standard Operating Procedures.
- Lead process improvement and initiate change.
- Analyze and assist in development of equipment maintenance and operation manuals.
- Overnight travel estimated at 20%.
Qualifications
- Mechanical aptitude
- Read and interpret blueprints and work orders
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and customers using both written and verbal communication skills
- Comfortable with various hand and power tools
- Lifting 50+ lbs
- Accurate and precise attention to detail
- Must be self-motivated and able to work as a part of a team to achieve the company’s overall goals
- Must be able to work under physically and mentally stressful situations
- Ability to make and read measurements with accuracy
- Willing to travel to service, install, and maintain equipment
- Working knowledge of properties and workability of bonding and ceramic materials
- High School Diploma or equivalent
