Function:

Receive, prepare, perform and report lab-type tests.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Investigate and evaluate reject samples, prepare samples for feed back to internal sources or for potential steel vendor claims.

Receives test samples and prepares test coupons which may be sent to outside lab.

Record results from tests performed and reports results to supervisors.

Performs general day-to-day maintenance of equipment within capabilities.

Performs lab heat treatment or experiments at direction of supervisor.

Current test types include: tensile (strip or full section); Hardness (HRb, HRc or Micro hardness; Chemistry, Charpy (except machining of specimens); decarb; grain size; dye penetrant; wet magnaflux; macro etch; mounting & polishing for micro analysis; micro-etch; limited micro & Macro analysis; surface smoothness; and crimp test, etc.

Knowledgeable and skilled In use of band saws, belt grinder, abrasive saw, hand tools micrometers, etc.

Performs other job related duties as required

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and calculate amounts such as weight/foot, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic math skills.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities: Must be computer literate and be able to learn and use HP programs such as e-mail, established programs, etc.
