Purchasing Manager Job at Hood Plywood
Responsible for the procurement of machinery, tools, materials, labor and supplies for Hood Industries’ Wiggins Plywood Mill. Confirms product specifications and quantities to ensure Hood Industries receives the most competitive prices within quality and delivery requirements. Manages storeroom staff including motivating, coaching and mentoring employees ensuring that all company and departmental procedures and expectations are met.
Functions
- Procure required goods for the mill. Establish and adhere to consistent processes, standards, and expectations for purchasing to ensure ongoing performance within the company, regulatory (tax) and legal requirements.
- Solicit competitive quotes and bids. Negotiate volume purchase agreements as appropriate to secure the best prices, terms and responsiveness.
- Oversee receiving clerk(s) to ensure material is received and logged timely in our Guardian Purchase Order software system.
- Responsible for maintaining a neat and orderly supply and parts warehouse.
- Build productive relationships with suppliers and consistently reinforce a commitment to quality and ethics toward both internal and external customers and business contacts.
- Maintain a familiarity with business issues facing vendors that may affect availability, pricing or delivery of product.
- Utilize company software, Guardian, to maintain appropriate records, including requisitions, purchase orders and receiving records.
- Maintain appropriate records of vendor correspondence, purchase agreements, contracts and supervise accurate inventory levels in the storeroom.
- Maintain and update certificate of insurance on all contractors and suppliers who are on plant site on a regular basis.
- Review and analyze materials usage patterns, budgets, operating plans to identify opportunities for cost savings and logistical improvements.
- Understand the state and local use tax laws and regulations. Apply proper tax code to all items purchased.
- Provide Safety Data Sheets on all new chemicals purchased.
- Investigate materials and supply quality issues, or vendor problems. Follow-up with plant staff and vendors to resolve problems.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent with extensive training or experience in computer-based accounting or administration.
- 5-6 years of experience in administration, purchasing, accounting and related areas in a manufacturing environment, with at least 3 years specifically in plant equipment and materials purchasing.
- Strong purchasing knowledge, negotiating skills and excellent problem solving skills.
- Strong planning and organizational skills.
- Vendor knowledge and ability to build long-lasting relationships.
- Must be willing to work flexible work schedules to be available nights, weekends, and after hours if necessary.
- Demonstrate teamwork and ability to mentor subordinate staff.
- Ability to multi-task.
