GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:
This is a part-time, 27.5 hour a week position primarily at the Estherville Campus. Provide individual and small group tutoring to current students on campus or virtually. Recruit students to the TRIO-SSS Program. Assist students in improving academic achievement by clarifying learning problems and work on study skills. Other assistance may include reviewing class material, discussing the text, predicting test questions, or working on solutions to problems. Academic coaching/tutoring is supplemental to classroom teaching. May be required to travel between campuses using personal vehicle.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (% OF THE TIME):

Constant (67-100%)

  • Meet with students to provide learning assistance in Arts and Science Disciplines, including but not limited to, Science, Math, English, Social Sciences and Humanities.
  • Be knowledgeable of course information and appropriate teaching strategies.
  • Connect students with appropriate support program(s) to assist with student retention.
  • Track all activities conducted within the tutor session and keep daily attendance.
  • Contact instructors, if necessary, to obtain course syllabi or course specific materials.
  • Keep open communication with staff and faculty.
  • Call tutoring supervisor with 24 hours advanced notice if unable to keep your scheduled session.
  • Remain in tutoring room(s) for entire scheduled time.
  • Recruit eligible participants to the TRIO-SSS program.
  • Maintain required grant documentation.

Frequent (34-66%)

  • Participate in tutor-training sessions.
  • Mentor student tutors and assist with peer-to-peer tutor trainings.
  • Create and post a monthly calendar.
  • Assist with additional duties as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrates knowledge and competence in the subject matter (specifically math and/or science).
  • Ability to exhibit patience and a positive attitude in an encouraging learning environment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with college level students and college personnel to promote student success.
  • Ability to effectively assist multiple students at one time.
  • Enthusiastic and energetic in job performance; maintain high standard of ethics, honesty and integrity in assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of students – from those who are academically underprepared to those who are highly knowledgeable.
  • Ability to input and retrieve information from computer system.
  • Possess good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Teams, Zoom and DocuSign software.

SPECIAL DEMANDS:

Position involves sitting most of the time; exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally (10-33%). Stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying, and repetitive motion occasionally (10-33%). Walking, lifting and grasping frequently (34-66%). Talking, hearing, and viewing various types of close visual work constantly (67-100%). May be required to travel utilizing personal vehicle. Must have valid driver’s license, good driving record and provide proof of insurance.

Employment with Iowa Lakes Community College is dependent upon successful passage of a criminal background check. Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred. Strong math and science skills with three years previous teaching or tutoring experience in high school level or above is desired.

Salary: $21.20 per hour
