POSITION: Principal Algorithm Development/Data Scientist

REPORTS TO: VP Science and Technology

Job Summary:

The Principal Algorithm Development/Data Scientist will be able to demonstrate skills, expertise, and experience in the area of applied algorithm development and test for spectroscopy systems. Responsible for development, implementation, test, and release of algorithms for identification applications for handheld products. This can include processing existing data from our deployed fleet, collection of data to support algorithm testing and when possible, generate synthetic data to test algorithms. Enjoys developing solutions for internal and external customers with a diverse team ranging from subject matter experts in spectroscopy during development to supporting continuous improvement activities with operations and supporting customers in field. An appointment at the Scientist, Senior Scientist or Principal level will correspond to relevant skills and experience of the candidate. It is common for a candidate to present a previous problem and solution as a seminar.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Work within a continuous improvement framework to improve identification performance of deployed and in development chemical identification products.
• Routinely communicates project status to team and organization, including raising awareness for program issues and driving to resolutions.
• Supports project report outs and deliverables for formal gate reviews. Principal level candidates are expected to lead report out and gate review activities in their area.
• Ability to work independently, when necessary, and to interface with multidisciplinary teams, working across departmental boundaries.
• Senior level candidates must demonstrate previous experience with development of spectroscopic classifiers as part of a team with specific contributions.
• Principal level candidates must demonstrate deep understanding and track record for developing algorithms for spectroscopic solutions.

Required Skills/Abilities:

Required:

• Demonstrable algorithm development skills and experience for classification problems
• Experiences with tools such as MATLAB, Python/NumPy/Matplotlib, C/C++ (Open source tools are preferred).
• Strong organizational and communication skills within a small team of engineers and scientists.
• Solid interpersonal skills, including the ability to foster positive working relationships with all levels of the organization.
• Effectively communicates complex, technical content.
• Experience working with software engineers for implementation, testing and release of algorithms.
• Willingness and flexibility to adapt to changing requirements.
• Strong critical thinking and persuasion skills.

In addition, for Senior level candidates:

• Experience developing identification algorithms for spectroscopic systems.
• Experience qualifying algorithm performance (ie ROC).
• Experience working with spectroscopic datasets.
• Experience characterizing spectroscopic systems.

In addition, for Principal level candidates

• Experience characterizing spectroscopic systems.
• Experience working with data from sensors/detectors (such as CCD, CMOS, InGaAs).
• Experience leading development of identification algorithms for spectroscopic systems.

Desired:

• Experience developing algorithms used in analytical devices (such as Raman, FTIR, XRF, LIBS, IMS, MS, etc).
• Experience working with customers in military, homeland security, pharmaceutical or petrochemical industries is highly desirable.
• Experience using open source tools kits like Pandas, scikitlearn, Keras or Tensor flow.
• Experience developing tools used by internal or external customers to support spectroscopic systems development, test and deployment.

Education and Experience:

• Will consider experience and education commensurate with position level in Engineering, Science, or related fields (Chemistry, Physics, Biomedical, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science).
• Bachelor's degree in in above mentioned fields preferred, but not required.

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
