WHO MAY APPLY FOR POLICE OFFICER:
  • Certified Applicants – Those who have successfully completed the required minimum standards training necessary for recognition as a sworn law enforcement officer being in good standing with the commission who have been granted a certificate of minimum standards issued by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) and who have no lapse in service greater than 24 months since his or her last day of employment as a law enforcement officer in the state of Alabama.
  • Lapsed-Certified Applicants – Those who, at the time of application, have successfully completed the required minimum standards training necessary for recognition as a sworn law enforcement officer in the state of Alabama but have a lapse in service greater than twenty-four (24) months since his or her last day of employment as a sworn law enforcement officer in the state of Alabama.
  • Non-Certified Applicants – Those who have passed the Law Enforcement Officer Physical Agility/Ability Test at the Mobile Police Department's testing facility within the past year and do not possess a law enforcement certification from the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission. Note that this includes "Lateral Transfer" applicants who are certified federally or in another state as a sworn peace officer.
The Physical Agility/Ability test required for Non-Certified and Lapsed Certified applicants consists of an obstacle course to be completed in 90 sec. Other requirements are 22 push-ups in 1 minute, 25 sit-ups in 1 minute, and 1.5 mile run in 15:28. For more information, click HERE (Download PDF reader).

EXAMINATION DATES: PHYSICAL AGILITY/ABILITY TEST DATES

The Physical Agility/Ability test required for Non-Certified and Lapsed Certified applicants is administered at the Mobile Police Department Training Academy located at 1251 Virginia Street Mobile Al, 36604 at 0900 hours. Candidates who have not already submitted their application should bring digital copies of their transcripts (Download PDF reader), veterans preference documentation (Download PDF reader) (DD214, VA letter), and/or any certificates they would like to attach to their application (First Aid, Basic Life Support, etc.). Physical copies are acceptable, but digital copies are preferable. Candidates should also bring a resume to use when filling out the work history portion of the application.

Candidates are scored based on the content of their work history section as well as the documents attached to their application regarding their education, training, or veteran’s status. These documents cannot be attached after the application is submitted so it is very important that these documents are attached BEFORE submitting an application.

Testing begins at 9 A.M. Applicants should show up with their driver’s license at least 30 minutes earlyto complete paperwork before the test. No appointment is necessary. The test is administered every Tuesday (except for holidays) and one Saturday each month as follows:
  • Amended 3/15/22 to include make-up testing date on March 17, 2022
  • Amended 4/20/22 to inlucde additional testing date on April 23, 2022
  • Amended 5/26/22 to inlucde additional testing date on June 25, 2022

Applicants who pass this test will be provided with a Law Enforcement Officer Physical Agility/Ability Verification Form (LEOPA) that must be scanned, labeled, and attached to the application of Lapsed-Certified Applicants and Non-Certified Applicants. ATTENTION:
THE STATE OF ALABAMA HAS ADDED A BASIC ABILITY TEST FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT APPLICANTS, EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2017.
The Basic Ability Test (BAT) is required of all applicants for admission to the Police Academy, except those applicants who have been previously APOSTC certified and who are required to complete the Refresher training for reinstatement of their Certification or those who possess an earned associates or higher degree from a college or university accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), or its regional equivalent.

NOTE: Possession of a valid ACT WorkKeys Assessment Certificate is not a requirement for submission of this Police Officer online application.
Individuals who do not possess a valid ACT WorkKeys Assessment (BAT) may test at any Alabama Community College within the State. Additional notes related to education and the Basic Ability Test requirement:

    • Applicant MUST include in the work history section of their application their most recent employment as a sworn peace officer in the state of Alabama. If this employment was not within the last 24 months, you are a Lapsed-Certified applicant and must attach a valid LEOPA in addition to your APOSTC certificate.
Lapsed-certified applicants
  • Lapsed-certified applicants must have passed the Physical Agility/Ability Test at the Mobile Police Department's testing facility within the past year
  • In order to apply as a Lapsed-certified Applicant:
    • Applicant MUST scan, clearly label, and electronically attach an APOSTC certificate as proof of certification as a sworn Law Enforcement Officer.
    • Applicant MUST scan, clearly label, and electronically attach a Law Enforcement Officer Physical Agility/Ability Verification Form as proof of a current passing score on the Law Enforcement Officer Physical Agility/Ability Test taken at the Mobile Police Department's testing facility in order to advance in the testing process.
Non-certified Applicants
  • Non-certified applicants must have passed the Physical Agility/Ability Test at the Mobile Police Department's testing facility within the past year
  • In order to apply as a Non-certified Applicant:
    • Applicant MUST scan, clearly label, and electronically attach a Law Enforcement Officer Physical Agility/Ability Verification Form as proof of a current passing score on the Law Enforcement Officer Physical Agility/Ability Test taken at the Mobile Police Department's testing facility in order to advance in the testing process.
    • If the applicant is certified as a sworn peace officer federally or in another state and would like their certification considered for credit, they may attach such certification to the application. This does not satisfy the requirement for the Law Enforcement Officer Physical Agility/Ability Verification Form, but it may be taken into consideration in the evaluation of your application.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR POLICE OFFICER APPLICANTS
Candidates must be able to establish they are of good character and reputation. In addition, candidates must meet all standards promulgated by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (see the APOSTC website at www.apostc.state.al.us for complete details).
Applicants meeting any of the following conditions may be rejected:
  • Conviction of any felony, unless adjudicated as a youthful offender, or juvenile.
  • Military discharge under other than honorable conditions.
  • On-line, correspondence, or mail order GED certificates are not acceptable.
  • Any domestic violence conviction.
  • Any person prohibited by state or federal law from owning, possessing, or carrying a firearm.
  • Usage or manufacture of illegal drugs within the previous year.
  • Conviction of Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the previous year.
  • Dismissal from a job for disciplinary reasons within the previous year.
  • Under current charges, or on probation, for any offense other than minor traffic violations.

The Basic Ability Test requirement, background and criminal history of all applicants will be checked by local law enforcement agencies and applicants are subject to disqualification based on those findings. Additional areas other than those indicated can result in disqualification based upon a full evaluation of information submitted. In addition, all applicants must meet State of Alabama requirements for fitness.

EXAMINATION: IMPORTANT NOTICE TO APPLICANTS. READ CAREFULLY. No written or oral examination will be required. Applicants will be scored on the basis of an evaluation of their education, training, experience and personal qualifications as outlined by the candidates' sworn statements in their application, upon corroborative evidence obtained by investigation and the applicants' responses to the job-specific Supplemental Questions. Applicants must provide all background information and supportive documents as requested on the application, supplemental questions and job posting.

SPECIAL NOTICE: The City of Mobile Police Department has adopted a policy of only hiring NON-USERS of tobacco products, either smoke or smokeless type, for the job of Police Officer.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, preferably supplemented by college level course work in criminal justice or law enforcement, and preferably some experience dealing with the public under varying circumstances; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence. Must be 20 years of age - except for assignment to the City of Satsuma which requires 21 years of age or the City of Mobile which requires 19 years of age. May be required to have successfully completed the required minimum standards training necessary for recognition as a sworn law enforcement officer. No maximum age limit.

Some knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures with ability to apply this knowledge to specific situations.

Some knowledge of the geography of the City and the location of important buildings or ability to acquire this knowledge rapidly.

Ability to prepare clear and comprehensive reports.

Description

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.)

Patrols in a designated area of the City on foot, in a patrol boat, on a radio-equipped motorcycle, or in an audio-equipped car to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of crime, to direct traffic and to enforce motor vehicle operation and parking regulations.

Answers calls and complaints involving fire, automobile accidents, robberies, neighborhood disturbances and other misdemeanors and felonies.

Secures the scene of crime, obtains witnesses and makes arrests.

Testifies as a witness in court in connection with arrests and citations made.

Administers first aid at the scene of automobile accidents.

Interviews witnesses, gathers information and prepares detailed reports.

Interviews persons with complaints and inquiries and attempts to make proper disposition or direct them to proper authorities.

Gives advice on laws and ordinances and general information to the public.

Attends regular training classes in police methods, first aid, target practice and related subjects.

Keeps informed with respect to persons of known bad character and places of questionable legality within an assigned area.

Transfers prisoners.

Serves warrants, subpoenas and other legal notices.

Operates radar unit in enforcing traffic laws.

Issues traffic citations.

Fills out traffic accident and criminal offense reports.

Escorts funerals, wide loads and mobile homes.

Assists in the docket room or in the court.

Gathers statistics on accidents and violations.

When assigned to the juvenile division, works with delinquency problems.

Performs related work as required.

Important Information

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK: An employee in this class performs routine patrol, preliminary investigations and traffic control duties in a designated area on an assigned shift. Work may be performed in cruiser cars, patrol boats, on motorcycles or on foot. Police officers may also be assigned to perform specialized duties in support of specific units or sections. Work may involve an element of personal danger and employees must be able to act without immediate supervision and exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies. Specific work assignments are made by a Police Sergeant or other superior and work methods and results are checked through personal inspections, review of reports and discussions.

The purpose of these seminars is to acquaint applicants or interested citizens with design format and procedures utilized by the department in its administration of written test selection devices. Inasmuch as testing facilities are limited, the seminars will be on a first come, first served basis, as long as space remains available.
