Greater Portland Peer Services is an emerging non-profit, peer support provider that utilizes a model in which individuals in recovery from mental illness and/or substance use disorder provide non-clinical support and services to people with similar backgrounds who are in need of such services. Employees utilize the State Certified Peer Support Model which advocates using relationships to see things from new angles, developing greater awareness of personal and relational patterns, and supporting and challenging each other to try new things. This position will be focused on a group of residents currently living in units subsidized by the Portland Housing Authority at the Franklin Towers and Harbor Terrace locations. The core mission for this effort is to assist tenants who live with mental health and/or substance use disorder challenges which affect their ability to retain stable housing.

Job Specifications:

  • This is a P/T position which offers paid time off for sick leave and vacation
  • Work shift currently available is Saturday-Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. -7:00 p.m.
  • The salary range for this position is $20-$24/hr depending on experience
  • Reliable transportation required for this position
  • This position reports directly to the Greater Portland Peer Support Manager
  • This position requires completion of the Certified Peer Support Training program within one year

Job Duties

  • Build relationships with PHA tenants based on authentic and mutual connection seeking to re-define help as a co-learning and growing process
  • Support tenants in retaining stable housing (prevent eviction) through – but not limited to - assistance with employment, food security, peace of mind/safety, substance use recovery, social networks, and healthy boundaries
  • Assist in improving health outcomes and improved quality of life
  • Reduce use of crisis services, hospitalizations, and police calls through peer-based crisis intervention and de-escalation interactions
  • Provide written, non-clinical reports to Program Manager
  • Interact regularly with PHA staff in an open, clear and collaborative style
  • Make appropriate referrals to community resources (furniture, clothing, food, healthcare, mental health, detox, primary healthcare services, healthcare services, etc.)
  • Coaching/assistance with ADLs as needed (laundry, personal hygiene, cleaning, etc.)
  • Transportation assistance to medical appointments, shopping, etc.
