Summary: The Patient Travel Specialist s upports and coordinates travel services for KANA patients by coordinating patient travel and generating payment requisitions for travel services.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by this position. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Support the organization’s mission and goals, quality standards, and patient-centered medical home philosophy.   • Uphold KANA’s Code of Ethics by conducting professional activities with honesty, integrity, respect, fairness, and good faith in a manner that reflects positively upon the organization.
  • Responsible for ensuring patients meet the eligibility requirements for travel. Refer patient to Patient Benefits Coordinator for screening if patient does not have insurance coverage.
  • Coordinate travel to Kodiak/KANA for appointments for patients in the outlying villages.
  • Utilize AFHCAN Program to pull travel referral letters from ANMC/ANTHC/SCF for patients needing travel arrangements. Make contact with patient to confirm details of travel needed and confirm insurance coverage.
  • Coordinate with the Patient Benefit Coordinator to ensure alternate resources available and utilized such as Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, and federal programs such as VA, TSHIP, Worker’s Comp or Fisherman’s Fund.
  • Arrange travel and secure lodging for KANA beneficiaries with medical or dental referrals both within and outside of the Kodiak area. Assist in patient care coordination by creating timely travel packets for authorized, scheduled appointments.
  • Communicate with Alaska Medicaid office personnel to secure prior-authorization for all travel related to Medicaid covered patients. Call and update all prior authorizations when patients are held in Kodiak due to weather or medical needs.
  • Record all travel related charges in ReQlogic program keeping track of all expenditures.
  • Participate in the afterhours travel call schedule as assigned.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and three years' experience working with the public in an office setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience. One year experience working with Medicaid. Knowledge of HIPAA, and other state and federal regulations governing healthcare practices preferred.

Knowledge of Database and Spreadsheet software; Advanced knowledge with using the Internet and computer skills to support learning and navigating the employee health record system.
