Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) is looking for Research Operations Engineer for the Mechanical and Thermal Engineering Sciences (MTES) Directorate. MTES Directorate drives technological innovation in energy efficiency, sustainable transportation, and renewable power. MTES provides engineering and scientific expertise to a variety of federal agencies, including the U.S. department of Energy’s Office of Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Office of Science, and Advanced Research Projects Agency, as well as university and industry partners.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing support for the research readiness of facilities and equipment and the implementation of NRELs’ Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS). It ensures compliance with applicable safety and environmental requirements. The successful candidate will work closely with the MTES research operations team and the Research Operations Manager. Additionally:
- Supports the coordination of emergency response protocols with Site Operations and Security Organizations.
- Supports the coordination of the MTES research operations maintenance funds.
- Supports the coordination of LOSA training for MTES.
- Implement process improvement activities to enhance research workflows.
- Assists with problem solving for complex safety, space, and research integration issues.
- Participates in the development and implementation of directorate safety policies and minimum standards.
- Supports daily operations oversight to promote optimal use of laboratory space and capabilities.

Basic Qualifications
For Researcher III
Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience .
For Researcher II
Relevant Master's Degree . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience

Additional Required Qualifications
- Experience with CAD software a plus to enable assisting staff with detailed drawings and engineering design.
- Possess organizational skills and be able to prioritize and manage several issues at the same time.
- Must be personable and able to develop strong collaborative relationships with MTES staff and other department personnel.
- Promote a positive team approach and collaborative environment to ensure the achievement of research objectives and milestones.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of scientific concepts, principles, practices, and methods to conduct sound research.
- Understands and complies with safety and environmental standards to maintain a safe environment.
- Knowledge of Laboratory and DOE policies and procedures.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $75,500 - $135,900
Job Profile: Researcher II / Annual Salary Range: $69,400 - $114,500
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
