Job Title: EKG Monitor Technician/ Unit Secretary

Job Summary: The Monitor Tech performs various functions that support the multidisciplinary team in delivering high quality, cost-effective care. The Monitor tech employs effective communication skills in all interactions and when relaying important EKG changes to nursing staff. Maintains competency requirements for EKG interpretation, computer skills associated with the monitoring system and other job-related functions. Maintains vigilant monitoring to ensure EKG dysrhythmias are reported and documented per policy. This position will routinely perform Unit Secretary duties for the unit as assigned.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Monitors heart rhythm pattern of patients in special care unit of hospital to detect abnormal pattern variances, using telemetry equipment: Reviews patient information to determine normal heart rhythm pattern, current pattern, and prior variances.
  • Observes screen of cardiac monitor and listens for alarm to identify abnormal variation in heart rhythm.
  • Promptly informs primary care nurse, charge nurses, nurses, or nursing supervisor of variances to initiate examination of patient.
  • Demonstrate ability to correctly and safely operate the Telemetry equipment, office equipment and maintain a safe environment.
  • Maintains current competencies as well as updated knowledge in specific area of practice.
  • Serves as a role model for the Mission, Vision and Values of the organization and fulfills other job duties as requested within Scope of Practice

  • Maintains established departmental policies/procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs and technical standards.

  • Demonstrates cooperation, flexibility, reliability, and dependability in all daily work activities and a willingness to collaborate with others for the good of the customer and the organization.

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma or its equivalent is required.
  • Prior health care experience and medical terminology required.
  • A minimum of 12 months experience monitoring ECG/ Dysrhythmia in an acute care setting preferred.

Licensure/Certifications:

  • Current BLS for Health Care Providers card.
  • Successful completion of Dysrhythmia for Monitor Tech course prior to completion of orientation.
