Purpose:
The Recycling Laborer is responsible for collecting and processing commodities at the Missaukee County Recycling Center. Work requires knowledge of commodity handling equipment and on-site maintenance. Work is performed under direct supervision of the Missaukee County Recycling Center Site Supervisor.
Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
Any employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. These examples do not include all the duties that the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
- Greet customers at commodity processing line.
- Assist customers with sorting/processing of commodities. Politely decline non-recyclable materials.
- Maintain facility to maximize customer comfort, safety, and ease in unloading
commodities. Maintain productive work environment and good image of Missaukee County Recycling program.
- Instruct new residents about recycling opportunities and provide refresher information to existing residents.
- Operate skid steer, balers, as necessary to sort/process recycling commodities.
- Adhere to safety protocols as determined by Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) and any other safety standards as determined by employer.Employment Qualifications:

- High school graduate or GED
- Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees and the public.
- Must be able to communicate effectively.
- Must be clean, have a pleasant and caring manner, be helpful and able to work well with other people.
Physical Requirements:
This job requires the ability to perform the essential functions contained in this description. These include, but are not limited to, the following requirements:
- Able to walk to customer cars.
- Able to lift 20 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
- Able to drive a skid steer and operate balers.
- Able to hear, read and speak English.

Working Conditions:
- Works at the Missaukee County Recycling Center. Daily shift between Memorial Day and Labor Day is Tuesday and Wednesday 8 AM to 3 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 1 PM. Daily shift between Labor Day and Memorial Day is Wednesday 8 AM to 3 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 1 PM. Hours at Missaukee County Recycling Center based upon workflow.
- Work takes place outside most of the time in varying weather conditions, i.e., heat, cold, rain/dampness, etc.
Safety Training and Compliance
- Before operating any equipment, employee will watch safety videos on balers & skid steer with Safety Coordinator & sign training log.
- After video training, employee will complete on-site safety training with Safety Coordinator & sign training log.
- Must wear proper puncture-resistant footwear, such as steel toed boots; stipend for proper protective footwear provided upon hire and biannually thereafter. See OSHA standard 1910.136(b)(2) “protective footwear that is constructed in accordance with one of the above consensus standards will be deemed to be in compliance with the requirements of this section.”
- Must wear safety glasses while operating baler(s) or in vicinity of operating baler(s). Employer will provide safety glasses.
- Must wear gloves while handling baling wire. Employer will provide gloves.
Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Status:
Non-exempt.
