Responsibilities

• Characterization of a broad range of elastomers and soft goods to select the best materials for the development of research prototypes.

Evaluation of mechanical properties of elastomers and textile materials at coupon, component, subsystem and system levels using standard test procedures and tooling.

Manage sample input and output in a testing laboratory.

Design of new tooling, develop test methods and conduct mechanical and electromechanical characterization of prototypes collaborating with cross functional teams.

Develop 3D and mathematical models of test infrastructure, and parts for prototyping or building test set-ups

Develop reusable code libraries for communicating with test instrumentation and characterizing custom components.

Effectively communicate findings to the research organization through reports, summaries, and presentations based on the data acquired.

Continuous communication with several DRIs of different projects.

Excellent organizational skills to keep track of testing status and planned testing.

Required Qualifications

• Holds a BS/MS/PhD in material science, polymer science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronic engineering.

3+ years of hands on testing experience w/ various electrical and mechanical testing equipment, particularly experience taking electrical measurements under dynamic strain conditions.

5+ years using ASTM, ISO and other standards to ensure validated and reliable testing and perform failure analysis.

3+ years of experience in polymer characterization techniques: DSC, TGA, DMA, FTIR, GPC, SEM, AFM, WCA, rheometer, etc.

Understand the relation between chemical structure and properties of polymers and soft goods.

3+ years operating mechanical testing equipment such as Instron, experience performing electrical measurements for resistance under load, impedance analyzer.

3+ years using CAD tools such as NX, Solidworks, or equivalent and ability to communicate with fabrication teams (e.g., 3D printers, machinist). Experience designing and building customized test set ups.

3+ years of experience analyzing data using MATLAB, Python, ML, JMP or similar.

Demonstrate a high level of organization to handle multiple samples, projects and testing in parallel.

Excellent organizational and communication skills to keep track of the data generated, make it readily accessible as needed and communicate with cross-functional teams.

Experience working in a fast paced environment.

Desired Qualifications

• 5+ years experience in characterization for elastomers and soft goods.

5+ years experience in reliability testing and failure analysis for elastomers and soft goods.

5+ years experience in laser cutting, knitting, sewing, 3D printing, polymer over molding processes

Design experience with hard-to-soft interfaces, specifically for softgoods & textiles

Familiarity with emerging technologies such as VR/AR, haptics, or wearables

Experience with soft goods manufacturing and general small parts assembly

Experience with soldering, PSA and hot-melt adhesive bondingStrong communication and personal management skills.

Will this person have special hardware or software needs?:

Solid works, JMP, Python.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $150,000.00 - $200,000.00 per year
